Subcomandante Marcos on Independent Media

We have a choice. We can have a cynical attitude in the face of the media and say nothing can be done about the dollar power that creates itself in images, words, digital communication, and computer systems that invade not just with an invasion of power but with a way of seeing that world, of how they think the world should look.

ANIMALS SUFFERING AT ZOO

SERBIA: BELGRADE ZOO From Merritt Clifton’s email (regarding Belgrade Zoo story) I would point out that the message of a campaign about the zoo could either be, "Don't visit the zoo because it is cruel to Animals," or "Come see what we need to fix at the Zoo, and help us do it. The Animals are counting on your help."

City blockade 'did disrupt the summit'

ANARCHISTS who blockaded streets in Edinburgh during the G8 have claimed their tactics successfully disrupted the Gleneagles summit. Members of the radical Dissent network staged a number of road blockades in the west of the Capital, as well as an attempted blockade of the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Lothian Road. The incidents on Wednesday, July 6, were only minor compared to the disruption around Stirling, where the M9 and A9 were both shut for hours. But Dissent believes it tricked the police into flooding Edinburgh with officers, leaving roads nearer Gleneagles easier to target. One insider said: "The delegation from Japan ended up being delayed an additional half hour, just to get out the hotel. "The police were mistakenly convinced that Edinburgh would be the focus of the blockades, and sent most of their forces there. "Entire delegations cancelled their arrivals, or were delayed until the late afternoon."

France 'closes' borders - Minister: UK bombers earlier arrested.

France reintroduces border controls within the European Union after last week's terrorist bomb blasts in London. "Ninety-eight percent of crimes can be tried, but there remain two percent that justice cannot settle. They are called state secrets."

Blockading the G8: personal accounts

The disruption caused by blockades during the opening day of this years G8 Summit was so massive, that entire delegations canceled their arrivals, or were delayed until the late afternoon. What follows is a compilation of first person accounts of the day, and information from inside sources. We also include some preliminary analysis of blockading tactics. The site of the summit. The Gleneagles golf resort, was chosen in the belief that its isolation would prevent effective protest. In the end, its isolation proved a liability, as protesters emerged from the surrounding forests and hills, forcing the police into unfamiliar territory, and outmaneuvering them until the roads of Scotland were paralyzed.
