Food Not Bombs Needs Help Feeding The Victims of Katrina

Food Not Bombs groups all across the southern United States are feeding families displaced by Katrina. We need clothes, food, cooks, cooking equipment, and money to provide for thousands of hungry homeless people.

Fake relief station set up for Bush photo op

Several sources report that a fake food distribution center was set up Friday for President Bush's photo op. Kevin Drum (http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2005_09/007042.php) quotes Senator Mary Landrieu: Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a Presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. Kevin also links to this post from Laura Rozen (http://www.warandpiece.com/blogdirs/002485.html), relaying a message from a Dutch TV viewer: ZDF News reported that the president's visit was a completely staged event. Their crew witnessed how the open air food distribution point Bush visited in front of the cameras was torn down immediately after the president and the herd of 'news people' had left and that others which were allegedly being set up were abandoned at the same time. The people in the area were once again left to fend for themselves, said ZDF.

Gorleben salt 'not safe' for nuclear waste

The German nuclear safety ministry says there’s not enough cover over a salt dome at Gorleben to keep it safe as a waste dump for a million years, but the opposition conservatives are determined to use it, anyway, if they win power on 18 September.
