Genetically modified crop research has moved from "terminator" technology to so-called "zombie" seeds. Where terminator genes would result in crops only producing sterile seeds (thus compelling farmers to buy a new batch each year), a new project is aiming to produce seeds that remain dormant until a custom chemical is applied.
