Philippines: An urgent call to the NDF and the GRP regarding the recent killings of farmers!

Collective

An urgent call to the National Democratic Front (NDF) and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) regarding the recent killings of farmers!

We, the undersigned, condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent spate of killings of farmers and farmer-leaders in Masbate and Bondoc Peninsula.

Several months ago on 26 December 2007, Botsoy Vale, farmer leader and elected Barangay Captain, was tortured and killed by the New People's Army (NPA - the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines). His death was claimed by the Jose Rapsing Command of the NPA in an official statement. We quote:

"Ang ikalawang pagsisikap na maparusahan si Botsoy ay nagmateryalisa noong Disyembre. Nakumpiska sa kanya ang isang kalibre 45 baril. Kusang dinala at inilayo siya sa mga walang kinalaman upang di sila madamay at maiwasan din ang di kinakailangang pagkatakot at pagkabigla sa mga ibang sibilyan."

Soon after Botsoy Vale’s death, a death list was issued by unknown texter/s, enumerating the names of the individuals whom they claim to be counter-revolutionaries. Included in this list was Rene Llabres.

Lothian & Borders Cops "OK with filtering evidence"

"THE Police Complaints Commissioner has voiced fears that there could be a 'potentially serious systemic failure' within a Scottish force that would damage the delivery of justice.

He said Lothian and Borders Police had filtered the information it passed on to the Procurator Fiscal. He added that officers up to Deputy Chief Constable Tom Halpin appeared to be of the view this practice was acceptable."

Council cuts jobs, gives money to business

Glasgow City Council is cutting 400 jobs but still has enough money to make cheap loans to small businesses, build an unwanted motorway for the benefit of those outside the city and give free parking on the sunday before Xmas.

Also for businesses, "we will offer services like repayment holidays and flexible interest rates appropriate to how the business is performing" which makes for a sharp contrast to their recent aggressive chasing of individuals with council tax debt.

Grangemouth biodiesel plant scrapped

Plans for a biodiesel plant at Grangemouth have been put on indefinite hold by owners Ineos, who provoked a strike there in April by attacking pension obligations.

"Heathrow expansion not a problem"

Has the priceless sub-heading, "Third runway compatible with greenhouse gas targets, says Climate Change Committee chairman". That chairman is "Lord" Adair Turner, former head of the bosses' union the CBI and current head of piss-weak regulatory agency the Financial Services Authority.

What he says is: "It's possible for the world to cut greenhouse gases while still not cutting aviation by anything like as much, even increase aviation emissions."
