While traveling to Vancouver, Canada to speak at the Vancouver Public Library at a benefit for community radio stations, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and her two colleagues were detained by Canadian authorities. Amy was questioned extensively about the speech she intended to give; their car was gone through by armed border guards, and their papers and laptop computers were scoured. No to Fortress Europe: Turn off the Stockholm Programme!

Protests will take place in Brussels on 30 November and 1 December 09 as the EU ministers of interior and justice meet to agree the new ‘Stockholm Programme’.

Every five years, the interior and justice ministers of the EU adopt new directives for a common domestic policy. In 1999, the Tampere Programme focussed discussions on co-ordinated policies relating to the increasing control of populations both within and travelling to the EU. Much of the discussion emphasised ‘management of migration flows’, a euphemism for the selection of migrants who are ‘desirable’, in economic terms to EU member states, combined with a general increase of restrictions on movement into the EU, strengthening what has become known as ‘Fortress Europe’.

Report of STUC anti-racism march in Glasgow

The march was organised by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC). The Annual St Andrew’s Day Anti Racism March and Rally was designed to show a Scotland united against racism, and in difficult economic times will remind people of the dangers of allowing prejudice and discrimination to go unchallenged.

Are you ready for Salmond's St. Andrew's day betrayal?

Scottish republicans expect to be betrayed by royalists. But when republicans betray the cause of an independent Scottish republic by agreeing with royalists' plans it is an unexpected betrayal.

It is more important than ever for socialists and environmentalists to work together to challenge the system that puts profit and greed before the needs of people and planet, and to avert the potentially catastrophic consequences that climate change will have.

PUBLIC MEETING: Monday 30 November, 7pm. The Piper on the Square pub, corner of George Sq

with speakers:
Dan Glass - Plane Stupid
