Mountgrange dropping Canongate development

"THE DEVELOPER behind the collapsed £300 million Caltongate project in Edinburgh has indicated for the first time that it will not attempt to revive the project.

Manish Chande, co-owner of Mountgrange Capital, which was forced into administration by its banker Lloyds in March, told the Sunday Herald he was "close to divorce" from the project, expressing impatience with the planning delays and heritage objections that have dogged the four-year project.

Chande's decision to draw a line under Mountgrange's involvement in Caltongate comes as administrator Deloitte said it had held talks with other potential developers and that a deal could be "months if not weeks" away. This runs contrary to reports that Lloyds was leaning on the administrator to mothball the site until the commercial property market picked up in value."

 Camp sewage scandal

Profile by Fiona Howard

Thirteen huge oil drums containing human waste were removed from land behind the Faslane Peace Camp in a major operation yesterday morning.

The MoD called in clean-up experts after the 45-gallon drums were found behind the wall at the back of the camp.

The contractors, watched by MoD Police and the peace campers, sealed the drums and then removed them for safe disposal.

However, it is believed that the contents of the drums have previously been disposed of by the campers — either by spreading them over the MoD-owned land behind the camp or by pouring it directly into the Gareloch by way of a manhole in the grounds of the former St Andrew’s List D School.

And the local councillor for the area George Freeman said: “I am livid.”

“That people choose to live like this is totally unacceptable. The double standards of these people is staggering.

“They were the first to complain about very low levels of radiation, and that’s confirmed by SEPA, leaking into the Gareloch — but they are happy to pour 45-gallon drums of human excrement straight into the loch.

“I have asked our officers, specifically the environmental health officers, to consider whether some sort of action is necessary.”

He continued: “No-one else would be allowed to get away with something like this and we should not have double standards ourselves.
