FIGHT AGAINST CUTS IN CARE AT HOME SERVICES: WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT UNISON- CITY OF EDINBURGH BRANCH SOCIAL CARE CAMPAIGN
Edinburgh Council intends to privatise 75% of the care at home services within the next six years. At present the split between Council home care and private agencies is 50/50.
This proposal means another 25% going to the private sector.
They say this will save money.
Experience shows that agencies promise to deliver the service cheaper but when they have the contracts, they demand more money. The Councils often end up paying much more.
Meanwhile,Agency staff are paid appalling wages; are sometimes untrained and unvetted. There is a high turnover of staff. Everyone suffers!
As if the above wasn't bad enough, this proposal follows a package of cuts implemented at the end of last year which included;
- Care at home to be restricted to those who meet critical criteria and for hospital discharge. Once seen as not critical, the service is withdrawn.
- Only 1 hot meal a day
- a frozen meal
- 30 mins
- The use of short 30 min and 15 min visits to be maximised. Less time for care.
- Shopping service withdrawn
- A new care home built by the Council is now run by a private company Four Seasons
- Two new care homes have also been contracted to Four Seasons
- Rushed service
- Since these cuts have been implemented, staff are under even more pressure to provide a service which is rushed, leaving service-users with less choice and a service that barely maintains abasic level of care.
- The workforce is frustrated and demoralised as their professionalism is being continually compromised

On Thursday December 4th Amnesty International and Scottish Women's Aid are organising a demonstration outside the Scottish Parliament to highlight the plight of women under the No Recourse to Public Funds rule. We need 139 women to join us for this event and hope you will be able to help.
The No Recourse rule applies to people with insecure immigration status and means that they cannot claim "public funds", which includes most welfare benefits and temporary or permanent local authority housing. Our particular concern is for women attempting to flee situations of domestic violence, who are not eligible for support in domestic violence refuges.
Research by Scottish Women's Aid identified 176 women with No Recourse to Public Funds who requested support from Women's Aid groups in Scotland last year. Of these 139 sought refuge accommodation, even though they were not eligible for support. At present this vulnerable group are explicitly denied protection from abuse - protection which is offered to the rest of the population as a basic right.
To highlight our concerns we are organising a demonstration of 139 women (or all ages) outside the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 4th December from 11.30am to 12.15pm. The women will stand as a group outside the visitor entrance to the Parliament with placards reading "not protected."
Please note that men are also needed to stand in support with "Stop Violence Against Women" placards and leaflets so do come along.
Amnesty and Scottish Women's Aid are calling on the Scottish Government to provide emergency funding to ensure these women can be provided with the same protection as other women, to bring them within Scotland's national strategy to tackle violence against women and to lobby the Westminster Government to change the rules which currently exclude them from public support.

Glasgow's Radical Independent Book-fair project

Meet: Clyde Amphitheatre (by the river, east of the Spanish Civil War statue at Jamaica Street), 12:30pm
This event is organised by SCOTTISH CLIMATE CHANGE CAMPAIGN as the Scottish part of the Global Day of Action during the United Nations Climate Talks in Poznan, December 1st to 12th 2008. This international event will call on world leaders to take urgent action on climate change. We want to involve the widest possible range of people and organisations, so bring your banners with your message and all your family, friends and colleagues!
The purposes are: to be seen by the public and in the media; to bring together all the numerous organisations and individuals who are committing to action on climate change; and to invite them to bring their contributions under the theme of the march. We aim to send a positive message that we CAN indeed do something about the situation if we all work together on this and also tell our elected governments: Act now – for just solutions to climate change! We are prepared to act – are you?
We will be walking together from the Clyde Amphitheatre through Glasgow city centre towards Glasgow Caledonian University where we will hold the rally. Bring banners and anything bright, visual and colourful, as well as warm and waterproof clothing. There will be speakers, music, workshops and fun activities before, during and after the event!

Launch of volume 1 of An Anarchist FAQ
At long last we have the much anticipated book launch of An Anarchist FAQ (http://www.anarchistfaq.org.uk) at December’s Radical Independent Bookfair (http://www.ribproject.org/) in Glasgow. The main author Iain McKay (http://anarchism.pageabode.com/blogs/anarcho) will be speaking on the history and aims of the work, which has now been published by AK Press (http://www.akuk.com/). This will be followed by a discussion on the book.
“The anarchist FAQ has been one of the standout achievements of the last decade in terms of its rigorous treatment of every aspect of the theory. Its translation from screen to print is long overdue.” (Freedom)

ECAP/ACE Cinema special, featuring: Despite the Poll Tax and commentated footage of recent ECAP actions.
ECAP (Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty) has recently been campaigning against the mistreatment of people by the council over council tax issues and this session of ACE Cinema will concentrate on the stark comparisons between the current council tax and it’s predecessor, the Poll tax. Complete with footage from recent actions taken by ECAP, a definite chance to experience some of the groups based at ACE.
Despite the Poll Tax is a special issue video magazine about the legal and civil liberties implications of the Poll Tax. If questioned at all in the media most of the discourse about the inequities of poll tax concentrated on its economic injustices. Despite the Poll Tax however dug deeper into the largely ignored social and civil liberties implications of a colonial tax system.

The Glasgow Anarchist Federation calls for a picket outside the Greek consulate on Wednesday to coincide with our fellow workers general strike in Greece.
Since the cold blooded murder of young Alexandros Grigoropoulos on Saturday Greek cities have been alight with the flames of anger. The fraud of Roosevelt’s ‘new deal’ : lessons from the 1930s for today
Barack Obama is compared by media pundits to Franklin Roosevelt, US President during the 1930s depression. Here government spokespeople also refer favourably to his Presidency. The implication is that Roosevelt’s ‘new deal’ in response to mass unemployment is an example for today.
The speaker will look at how in reality the new deal was a raw deal for working people. It was also a war deal, at the heart of the US rulers preparation for World War Two.
The 1930’s though do provide valuable lessons for working people in the fight to overcome the divisions sown between employed and unemployed, as well as the fight to organise those both in unions and those not.
In the 1930s working people had a chance to overturn the capitalist system, a chance that was lost. Why that was and why we are in a stronger position today will be addressed by the speaker.

Happy whatever the hell it is we’re supposed to be celebrating folks. According to a popular folk tale some jewish bloke was born a couple of thousand years ago this month. As a result of this many of us will be going absolutely demented and spending more money than we have on crap that we don’t need.
In order to mark this we will be having a special festive social ni the Crystal Palace on Jamaica Street.
From 6p.m. on the 14th we will gather in the backroom for booze and banter of a generally subversive nature.
All are welcome, with the obvious exception of cops, fascists and wishy-washy liberals.

The Edinburgh Community Representatives Network is calling for a protest against the "Unfairer Scotland Fund"'s distribution, which will close down and seriously reduce social services in the poorest areas of Edinburgh.
In the Forth constituency, the change of funding criteria decided by the Edinburgh Council, means serious cuts of about £800 000; with the aim of disempowering the community.
Brandnew buildings, like the North Edinburgh Arts Centre and the Muirhouse Millenium Centre are left with no money to fund any staff to open or run the buildings; the community newspaper is close to winding-up, and the funding for the Community Activist Training and Community Voices project have been cut totally.
The protest will take place in front of the City Chambers on the High Street, Thursday 18th of December, at 10 am.
