Rainbow peace flags and a colourful CND banner fluttered in a brisk wind to greet the crew of HMS Astute, who stood at attention on the deck of the brand new hunter-killer submarine as it sailed into Faslane Naval Base for the first time. Weekend of Action and Workshops at the Mainshill Solidarity Camp

Workshops and Action Weekend - Mainshill Solidarity Camp Gathering

RESIST new coal! Stop climate chaos!

While politicians are set to add more air to the climate pressure cooker in Copenhagen, the UK government is pushing ahead with doubling the number of opencast coal mines in the country. In the past 18 months 14 companies have applied to dig nearly 60 million tonnes of coal from 58 new or enlarged opencast mines. With our climate under imminent threat, this is just insane and needs to be stopped. So what better place than Mainshill for kicking off a December of direct action against climate criminals at home and abroad?

The Mainshill camp is occupying the site of a new open cast coal mine in Lanarkshire with lots of local support and seriously delaying work with digger diving, drill rig occupations and sabotage actions.

Join us for our open weekend Saturday 28th November until Tuesday 1st December. There’ll be direct action workshops, legal briefings and a guided tour of the site on Sat and Sun, plus whatever actions people are up for. Or come up any time!

There’s lots and lots to do – not only are contractors busy felling trees on site, there are also four opencast coal mines within spitting distance of Mainshill, as well as the Ravenstruther coal rail depot.

From jumping on machinery and building momentum and support in the community, to chopping wood and cleaning out the compost loos – there’s something for everyone!

Check out the brochure of coal targets in Scotland plus Digger Diving for Beginners.

WHAT TO BRING:

Activist held over book distro

An Edinburgh activist has been detained over the distribution of 'The Coming Insurrection'. The activist was intercepted when he tried to do a spontaneous book reading in Blackwells in South Bridge. The book came to the attention of the mass media recently when a fox news mouthpiece blabbed about it being a seditious and dangerous text and how we should all be burning it.

Anti-War Activists Disrupt NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Edinburgh

PRESS RELEASE

Anti-War Activists Disrupt NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Edinburgh

Trident Ploughshares Press Release 17 November, 2009 - For immediate release

Just after eight thirty this morning, several members of Trident Ploughshares blocked the entrance of the Edinburgh International Conference Center for quarter of an hour as Parliamentarians from NATO countries met for the final session of the assembly. Foreign Secretary David Milliband and the Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen were due to speak following a minute’s silence. The protesters wore shirts emblazoned with the images of wounded and traumatized Afghan children, graphically demonstrating the fact that NATO’s war in Afghanistan is killing innocent civilians and traumatizing children in violation of international law. They recited the names of Afghan civilians who have died since the war began. Several protesters were blocking the entrance to the Conference Centre so that Parliamentarians could see them on their way into the session or from the escalators inside the building. Police arrested six of them.
