Statement from Edinburgh Dissent Convergence Space Group

We are writing this to prepare people for the accommodation situation in Edinburgh. We want to encourage people to travel here to take part in the actions and Edinburgh convergence, but also to circulate this information as widely as possible. People in Edinburgh have, for several months, been trying to find a space suitable for G8 protesters to sleep, meet, eat, converge, plan, party, and self-organise. Our initial aim was to hire a building large enough to accommodate many people as well as providing meeting and social space. Our mandate from the network was to find a place we could manage and organise ourselves, and to provide legal sleeping space for those who needed it. However, after 2 spaces fell through, we found it impossible in Edinburgh, a city with few empty large industrial spaces (where most such spaces have been turned into luxury apartments), and high property prices, to rent a building for such a short period of time. Having made a commitment to provide legal space for those travelling to Edinburgh, we then made a proposal to Edinburgh City Council: to give us an empty building or piece of land, which we would provide infrastructure and equipment for and manage ourselves. The Council refused, as they want to concentrate all the protesters in one place – Hunter’s Hall Park, surrounding the Jack Kane centre. As we were left with no other option we approached the Council for a Dissent space within their site. We have managed finally to get that space where we can have a kitchen, info point, computers for general use, films and a kids’ space. There will be a circle of marquees for meeting and socialising, with a communal space in the middle. For many of us, it is a new experience to work with the Council and to ask them for something. Our experience and political preference lies in taking spaces ourselves and in self-organisation, rather than in lobbying or making demands of the state. We realised that this would be a huge compromise, but we felt and still feel that we have made a commitment to provide legal accommodation, and have no other choice. The problem is that we have no control over the layout and management of the Council campsite. The site has security, in the form of a large fence, security guards and CCTV cameras. We have been told that police will not be inside the campsite, but there will be a police liaison officer in the Council office outside. Also, people will have to pay £5 for the week to stay on the campsite. This is obviously not a situation we would choose and we have tried to explain to the council that this level of control will be considered repressive and unacceptable to many people, but with no success. We do not know whether the campsite is designed to repress us, or if the security and cameras are just a symptom of the society of control that we live in, that the Council impose without thinking. We understand that many people will not be able to accept this situation and will not wish to stay in this place. However we have also made a political choice to be at the Council site and we are putting a lot of effort into creating a zone there. It will not be a space in which we can have control over our perimeter, but we can choose how we organise inside and respond to situations together. We are going ahead, because we feel it is crucial that we have a presence in Edinburgh, both for the actions and demonstrations, and for communication with the other demonstrators. Now that we are in this situation we see the potential to reach out to the other movements who will be at the campsite. We want to create a self-organised space within the site and provide a kitchen and communal space. We feel this is necessary or there will be no potential for non-hierarchical decision making structures, to facilitate solidarity in the face of repression and help to create collective action against the G8. Dissent and anti–authoritarian movements in general, need to reach out and explain our ideas and actions. If we cannot organise in these conditions, which mirror those of our society we have little hope of changing our world. Also the Jack Kane community centre will hopefully help us break down the barriers between the protesters and local people; they are sympathetic and have already shown us solidarity, opening their space for our use. The campsite was created without consultation with the locals, in a working class area and they are losing the use of their park without getting anything back. On Thursday 30th June Dissent will be holding a welcome meeting in the convergence centre at 6pm (which is located at Teviot Student’s Union, University of Edinburgh, Bristo Square), and a discussion of the accommodation situation and what collective action we should take would be welcomed. On Friday July 1st, at the first Spokescouncil (10am-12pm & 4-6 pm), also in the convergence centre, we hope to raise these issues, consult everyone and decide on the options together. If after reading this information, you are sure you don’t want to go to the Council space, please still come to the Spokescouncil and we can solve the problems together. This is a warning, an explanation and a call out. For the moment this is our ONLY accommodation in Edinburgh. We need help to set this place up… set up will be on Thursday the 30th. Even if you are staying in Glasgow or Stirling please come and work for this one day! Especially we need people who can help with marquees. We also need help with any useful equipment – tarpaulin, wood, tools, info, films to show – everything or anything you can bring. The site is Jack Kane Centre, Hunter Hall Park, Niddrie Mains street, Craigmillar. You can take bus 2, 30, 32. Call if you can help or need directions 07963720402…

Yes congratulations Anon in getting a write up in the Sun Newspaper, it does seem that direct action does lead to more column inches.. something that has been evident to activists in far away and not so far away shores for decades…. However the article in the Sun wrongly attributes this direct action to Indymedia…. Indymedia is a distribution point for information which is generally sidelined by mainstream media, and should request a correction from the Sun newspaper, as it obviously had nothing to do with the trashing of the offices.. If they do manage to get the correction, which they will be well in their right to do so, they may find that through correction you will be able to propagate your mission statement far more effectively and many more people will find their way to the site and thus information on some of the many worthy issues published here… Indymedia should request the retraction and show us what independent media is all about!

Defacing or damaging property seems like a knee-jerk response. The emotion behind it being similar to politicians who race to start a war or pass a bill without thinking. We are trying to get politicians to think about the consequences of their actions before invading countries. We need to do the same even if a touch of spray paint is incomparable to the deaths of thousands. I doubt the spray paint changed anyone's mind let alone the politicians. How about orgainising a free lunch for the MP's and any passers by to demonstrate that we should get to know our community and look out for one another? Also, a couple of quick questions regarding the FTW coaltion articles: 1. "If politicians don't do what their constituents want, they should be scared for their lives", Isn't this similar to the line of thought we hate governments for using i.e "If constituents don't vote the way we want, they should be scared for their lives"? They are both forms of terrorism. I want politicians to be against war because they genuinely believe it not because they are scared for their lives. 2. "Article 1. Non-Violence: (a) Property damage is not violence. (b) Extreme psychological attacks on human or non-human animals is violence." Wouldn't Palestinians consider the bulldozing of their homes to be an extreme psychological attack?

well im looking forward to when you put on your free lunch, what a fabulous idea: please let us know when you have organised your free community building lunch outside their offices, and i will bring all my friends. despite their expenses totalling a hundred thousand pounds a year (over 150,000 pounds in griffiths case http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=1206&id=1590652006), im sure a free lunch is exactly what they need ;)

hmmm im surprised that there is any negative reaction to this kind of action at all. what is wrong with us when paint and broken windows has us condemning those who did it as mindless thugs and idiotic vandals? so instead, as mature and sensible adults, shall we march in the street with catchy slogans written on our placards, write petitions and strongly worded letters to our mp's and ask them (politely but firmly) to stop bombing other peoples countries?? good on you fuck the war coalition - even if it probably wont achieve anything, they definately deserved it.

Intimidation of these people is a tried and tested tactic. Make them afraid, make them face up to the war they have created, make them think again next time. Respect to all those who take to the streets to show their dissent and oppostion to the war. We need this expression but until we sit in the streets and bring cities to a standstill our voice will not be heard. Respect to everyone who tries to stop the war but if we are serious we must recognise when our tactics arent working and try something a little more effective. Big respect to fuck the war, take it to them hardcore so there ain't any doubt. Big up to the cloaked masses who are everywhere, on every street ready to bring this war machine down with our rage. Anarchy is order Rage is love The future is ours

To all you people who think that it makes any difference what your reaction to this action was. This is not a mainstream sanctioned watered down bollocksed protest this is an example of passionate resistance.Your opinion makes no difference, this action was not done by you, it probably wont be done by you and it didnt even need your approval to make it happen. In fact this is what is called autonomy children. The point is that someone felt this was necessary, someones worldview is aligned such that this was appropriete to do. And they did it. Indeed this manifestation is evidence for an implicit rebellion which is just below the surface of our society waiting for the next time when it can resurface. Know whereever you are whereever you sleep, that if you are a tirent you are not safe and will eventually be targetted by those who work to end oppression. We will destroy your war machine and create room for something beautiful to grow in its place. You cannot find us because we are everywhere. FUCK THE WAR

"Your opinion makes no difference" "this action was not done by you" "it probably wont be done by you and it didnt even need your approval to make it happen" "Intimidation of these people is a tried and tested tactic." What exactly is the difference between the government and fuck the war? You will create something beautiful? Really? Fuck the war = Fucking fools. You speak only for yourselves. I would put my name to this, but you hide behind 'anonymous poster' and threanten violence to those who disagree with you.
