Speak Gaelic? Want to see it supported on Indymedia Scotland? Now is your chance to make it happen, and potentially benefit other web projects as well.
It's been requested in the past that Indymedia Scotland support posting in the Gaelic language. Having looked into this, it is technically possible and we have someone willing to implement it on the site.
What we don't have is a Gaelic speaker who is able to do the translation work. So we must have a volunteer willing to do this, or it cannot happen.
The work would involve supplying translations of ~700 words and short phrases. The system we run on, Drupal, is available in many languages and powers a huge number and range of websites but it has not yet been translated into Scots Gaelic. If this "core" is translated then a much smaller number Indymedia-specific words would have to be translated.
Drupal is Free Software. All contributions would be freely available for others to use and benefit from. Translations for other minority languages, such as Basque and Catalan have been made available. This project obviously has the potential to help promote Gaelic beyond just this website.
So, we encourage our Gaelic-speaking readers to step forward! Email us at editors@imcscotland.org and we will get you working. Regular access to a computer and email is helpful but not essential.
