Successful Starbucks picket

A successful picket of the High Street Starbucks in Edinburgh was held by the Edinburgh-Chiapas Solidarity Group on Saturday, despite repeated intimidation by Edinburgh Fringe organisers. The picket was held to highlight Starbucks links with 'greenwash' group Conservation International. Conservation International has extensive and deep links to numerous widely-criticised multi-nationals including repeated environmental offenders such as Shell, BP and Rio Tinto. It has also been seeking to expel Zapatista and other indigenous groups from the Montes Azules biosphere area in Chiapas. Over 500 leaflets and many cups of Zapatista coffee were handed out at the picket with some members of the public turning away from Starbucks in solidarity with the campaign. Over 500 copies of leaflets were also handed out (for original text providing further information on Starbucks, Conservation International and the Zapatistas see http://scotland.indymedia.org/newswire/display/2030/index.php). Photos of the picket may follow later.
