How to insert images in your article

This guide will show you how to:

  • insert images into your article,
  • re-size them,
  • get the text to flow around the image,
  • and change the position of an inserted image.

Inserting an image into your article

So, you have an article, but it needs a picture. First you need to click on the Browse button, in the Image and File attachments box, which is shown below:

Clicking the Browse button allows you to search your computer for the file you are looking for. Select the file you want, and click OK. The location of the file will then be shown in the grey box, to the left of the browse button.

Next we need to attach this file to your article. We do this by clicking on the Attach button. The website will then tell you it is attaching the file. This might take a while if your file is large, so be patient!

Once the file is attached, the Image and File attachments box will look like this:

To insert the image into your article, you need to click on ether the Full sized or Thumnail, shown above with a green circle round them. The Full sized button inserts the image into the document, without reducing its size at all, while the Thumbnail button scales down the image, and insterts it into the document.

For this guide we will click on Full sized to insert the image at its original, unchanged size, and it will appear in the article, like in the picture below:

Changing the size of an inserted image

As you can see, the image is far too big. So we need to resize it. To do this, right click on the image, and select image properties.

This will bring up the image properties box, as shown below:

Highlighted in green, is where we can manually change the size of the image. The default is for the ratio between the width and height to be locked, so we just need to enter a new width, and the height will automatically change, and keep the proportions.

So, type in a new width for your image, 200 should be about right, and click OK. The image will have changed to a width of 200 pixels, if this is too large or small, follow the above steps again to correct the size. Below, we can see this image inserted into our article:

Getting the text to flow around the image.

As you can see, the text does not flow around the above image. To change the position of the image relative to the text, you need to right click on the image, and click on image properties, to bring up the image properties box again.

Then you need to click on the highlighted drop down box, and select the sort of alignment you want, (usually left, or right are good ones) then click OK. The image will be aligned with the text, like in the picture below:

Changing the position of an inserted image

Finally, to change the position of an image in an article, you can't just click and drag the image. What you need to do is (1) delete the image by clicking on it, and pressing the delete key on your keyboard, (2) clicking on the position in your article's text where you want the article to go, then (3) insert, and format the image, as described above.
