Non-custodial sentence for G20 RBS protester

A 17-year-old Scots-born woman arrested during the G20 protests in London appeared in court for sentencing this morning and received 8 months under a "referral order".

The London RBS branch having its windows repaired, post-G20The woman was arrested inside the RBS office which had received, let's say, unwelcome attention from the protesters. The smashing of its (surprisingly unprotected) windows was heavily photographed and filmed by the world's media, becoming the iconic image of the protests, at least until police involvement in the death of Ian Tomlinson was acknowledged by the media.

Having pled guilty to criminal damage and burglary at an earlier hearing, after an unaccompanied police interview, the charges could have attracted a custodial sentence. However a referral order in English law is thought to be similar to, or the equivalent of, supervision by the Children's Panel in Scotland (I Am Not A Lawyer, though).
