The Govanhill Baths is opening its doors for the second time since the Baths was closed in 2001, following the eviction of a community building occupation. The building will be open on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of September for the public to see the Baths in its current state and find out about plans for its future redevelopment.
The Govanhill Baths Art and Regeneration Team would like to invite people to propose ideas for artwork to be sited in the space for the weekend. We would like the work to be relevant to the space, its architecture, social history or the campaign to save it. There are lots of different spaces in the building, including three pools, individual baths, the old steamie (laundry) area, changing areas, reception. The building is in a poor state of repair (because it hasn’t been maintained since it closed) although structurally sound.
Most of the contents of the building have been removed. For more information about the Baths, its past and future see the web site.
The artwork can be in any medium: a sculpture, painting, performance, photograph, text piece, intervention etc. It can be solo or collaborative.
There is limited potential to fix work to walls or floors so work that needs a fixed space is preferably sited on the floor, plinths, leaning on walls, lightly fixed to walls. There is no source of power or running water in the building. Please feel free to get in contact to discuss different options.
There is no budget available for the production of work but the team will assist in the installation, organise installation materials and equipment where possible and organise the marketing, publicity and interpretation materials.
Works will be selected that encompass a range of responses to the Baths and that compliment each other. We are planning to install a sound piece in part of the building, which will be drawn from stories about the Baths in the community.
We hope to arrange a site visit for people wishing to submit a proposal in June, please get in touch if you would be interested in coming along. A site map and photos of the space will also be available on request (and on the website). Deadline for submitting proposals is 30th of June and we will get back to you by the 30th of
July.
Please include the following information in your proposal:
- Name and contact details
- Proposed work (as much detail about your ideas as possible). Explain how it is relevant or refers to the space.
- Approx dimensions or space required
- How the work is to be installed
- Technical requirements
- Any other information (please attach a CV or information about other creative project that you have been involved with)
If you have any questions about putting in a proposal please contact Alex Wilde, ART convenor at info@govanhillbaths.com.
