CHINA: 58 000 'Mass Incidents' in first 3 months of this year

In the first three months of this year there have been a joyous 58 000 separate 'mass incidents' code for strikes etc. Unsurprisingly this seems to be largely unspoken of in the mainstream press. Historically dissidents there face huge jail terms and even execution.

BBC Newsnight's Paul Mason is one of the few journalists that have (AFAIK) covered this type of thing in China. There were some excellent detailed reports early last year, where he met e.g. an unofficial workers' compensation group fighting industrial injuries. According to his blog, he's back in China at the moment looking at environmental issues. That should be interesting.
