Edinburgh calls out to stop Climate Change

December, the 3rd was propagated as the International Day against Climate Change .
Worldwide, demonstrations and protests have been announced to coincide with the meeting of the World Leaders in Montreal.
In Edinburgh about 200 protesters stood up against rain, cold and Xmas shopping to protest against the environmental-hostile, carbondioxide-blasting politics of the Scottish Executive via increased road-building schemes, such as the M74 extension, the Dalkeith Bypass and A701 Alignment, airport extensions and others.

After the demonstration, the little samba band (most likely Globalise Resistance trained) played a bit of noise, the "Protest in Harmony" sang some nice songs and some speakers talked to the audience.
Speakers included Mark Ballard, Green Party Scotland MSP, Lothians; Duncan McLaren, Friends of the Earth Scotland; Mark Lazarowicz, Labour Party, Leith and North Edinburgh; a student representatice and somebody from the "Campaign against Climate Change".

After the protesters successfully lobbied the empty parliament and cheered to the speeches, the demonstration dissolved.

Whileas Friends of the Earth focussed on the message, that "Nuclear Power is not the answer to Climate Change", the Edinburgh Stop the War Coalition advertised their lobby of the Scottish Parliament from midday onwards and the rally in Glasgow from 7pm onwards on Thursday 8th of December and the Green Party gave out leaflets to join their membership, pointing out the international inaction on climate change.

Other usual nutters included a 9/11 conspiracy theoriest and a "bringing any more children in this world is a crime" believer.

A round-up of the speeches with audio and more extended critical reviews of the leaflets will follow shortly.

the start of the demonstration was at East Market Street, under the Bridges, because it rained quite a bit
The Scottish Green party welcomed members from all nearby areas in Scotland
Friends of the Earth were present too. Here they quickly prepare their flags and spread happiness to the kids
more banners get prepared - including call for more receycling!
serious reason for protesting: future of the Kyoto Protocoll being discussed in Montreal, seeing politicians in preferance of short term economic gain instead of ensuring a long-term future for humanity and the Planet: capitalism rules!

Re: Edinburgh calls out to stop Climate Change

It was a great demo, but only the start, we really need to keep the momentum gained by these marches all around the world and keep up the pressure on politicians to act. To get involved with the campaign against climate change in Scotland visit the website, which has contact details and a link to our yahoo group. http://climatechangecampaign.blogspot.com Calvin Jones CCC-Aberdeen

Re: Edinburgh calls out to stop Climate Change

Glad some people turned out for the climate change rally. Why though was it not better advertised?.. me and number of friends tried to email organisers and the Scottish climate change yahoo address but yet no reply...hence none of us actually went to the demo but are all commited activists.

Re: Edinburgh calls out to stop Climate Change

Great achievement, well done to all involved. In response to Uggboot, I'm not sure that list is still active. I believe the organisation of the march fell rather heavily upon a few individuals who did their utmost best to spread the word and advertise the march as widely as possible, so it's a shame it didn't reach you.

Re: Edinburgh calls out to stop Climate Change

Whilst I support those on the march. How many actually do anything apart from march through the streets? Only up the road at Dalkeith there is the road protest, and how many turned up from this climate march I wonder?? Marching through the streets does'nt solve anything, it's only a voice!
