Day 2 at Offshore Europe Dirty Oil Conference

Enviromental Issues are paramount in todays world, Climate change has become a priority Issue, the biggest contributor to climate change is the extraction and production of oil.
Off Shore Europe comes to the Aberdeen Exhibition Conferecnce Center (AECC) every two years to find investors and custom.

Dressed in their 'invisibility' suits Martin King and Johnathon Livingstone entered the main entrance equipped with their hastily prepared 'education' tools from the night before - punched in their ID codes to the fast ticket machine fixed on their badges as they were printed out and made their way in.

We split up going in seperate directions visiting the stands of some of the worlds biggest climate criminals (Shell, Exon, BP etc). As we went we slipped leaflets and posters (spOILed, Be the change you want to see, Why Tar Sands =
License to Kill, Offshore Europe 2009 Fun Quiz - by Nestor Makno 2005) into the glossy brocheurs displayed on their stands - ready to be found by their prospective clients in due course. We also left a sprinkling of 'The Last Drop of Oil' (some wee capsules of oil we had labelled up) on these stands as we went.

The shell stand was thoughtfull enough to have a comments book - which we made particularly good use of asking them to: stop jailing Irish farmers and pull out of the Corib development in county Mao, Asking them to stop gas flaring in Nigeria and to stop killing Ogoni tribespeople, asking them to stop their activities in the Alberta tar sands extraction - currently responsible for daily dumping 11 million litres of untreated toxic waste into the Athabaska river - killing habitat - wildlife - and murdering the indigenous first nations population, and SHELL = PROFIT B4 LIFE.

After an hour or more of undertaking our re-education program we met up for the final phase. Whilst Johnathon livingstone put up 'spOILed' posters in the mens toilets Martin King liberally sprinkled them on the nearby stands and table tops. We then both proceeded up to the press area and left them several copies of our press release before exiting the centre to join our compadres on the outside. Mission accomplished.

Outside a further 2 individuals hung banners in a police designated protest space placed in a discreet area away from the main entrance, the banners bore the legends "No Blood for Oil" and "Tar Sands = Liscence to Kill", referring to the extraction of oil from the tar sands in Alberta Canada at enormous cost to the enviroment in the form of mass polloution.

They proceeded to don street theatre garb, one donned a traditional burka, the other a texan oil tycoon`s garb. The mock tycoon held a petrol pump to the burka`d womans head outside the AECC and along the surrounding roads, creating a powerful visual image open to interpretation, which was seen by hundreds of motorists and delegates.

Great Stuff!  Nice to see people confronting the oil industry!

Re: Day 2 at Offshore Europe Dirty Oil Conference

Does anybody have any solid information on the oil industry and north-sea oil such as the carbon emissions attributed to certain aspects, how much it is worth, how much they drill etc.?
