FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ST ANDREWS: ‘5 arrested at anti-G20 roadblock’

7/11/9: Five activists protesting the G20 finance ministers’ meeting blockaded a road tonight leading to the Fairmont Hotel in St Andrews. Nae Tae G20 legal support was contacted and volunteers were able to arrive and document the act of civil disobedience

The activists used locking arm tubes (lockboxes, lockon tubes) to form a circle in the middle of the road, blocking both lanes of traffic. The road is a three way fork where the A917 leading northwest to St Andrews and southeast to Boarhills/Krail meets the B9131 leading south to Anstruther.

The blockade lasted for over an hour and the last protester was cut from their arm tube at 20:08. Police presence kept the road blocked for another 16 minutes.

The protesters action created a full traffic stop in all three directions from 19:00 GMT until 20:24 GMT when traffic was finally allowed to pass. The queue of cars stretched far in all directions and within line towards St. Andrews included numerous cars, several coaches, and at least one hotel van heading towards the Fairmont Hotel.

While observing the blockade from the sidewalk, numerous Nae Tae G20 legal observes were verbally assualted and three were shoved by police, one being knocked to the ground. Following traffic resuming, while returning to St Andrews, the legal observers with Nae Tae G20 were stopped by police twice and forced to provide their names and other identifying information or be arrested. Police also individually filmed each legal observer and described them physically to the camera.

Re: ST ANDREWS: '5 arrested at anti-G20 roadblock'

Quite right that they were arrested.  The police are doing their job.  They are not allowed to be affiliated to any political party, they are not part of or responsible for or maybe not even in agreement with G20 etc etc.  But they are not allowed to have their views or mention them, they are there to keep the peace, protect life and property etc etc.  Let them do their job without you lot making stuff up about how BAD they are.  Tell you what, next time you are assaulted, or your house is broken into, dont phone them, Nope, dont tell them about it because they are facists and they are just there to infringe on your human rights to put a lock on and generally make a nuisance of yourselves to law abiding citizens.  Lets hope your car doesnt get broken into, or a family member goes missing, or god forbid, there is a death in your family and the police have to come and deal with it.  Will you be shouting "he pushed me" ficticiously then???

So they shoved some people did they??  I dont think so, how come then there have been no complaints of assault made?  Does anyone reading this actually think that the police, whilst filming ALL of the events are going to shove people over??  I dont think so.  I think perhaps the persons involved may have taken a klinsmann style dive, PATHETIC!!!

When will you people get a life??  Yes, it is your right to protest, do you have to do it disrupting the lives of everyone else?  Cant you get a wee petition going? Or do something worthwhile instead of pointless lock ons and protests that piss off every normal person in the country and that the G20 leaders probably will never be aware happened.  Do you really think that is going to make a difference??  get a job and contribute to the country, that will make a difference!!

Oh and beore you have another go about police brutality and their cushy number, did you ever stop to think what they have dealt with that day?  A cot death? a fatal road traffic accident when they have to clean up body parts from the road so you can drive to your protest, then they have to go and tell the families of the accident, or take a dead baby away from its parents?  No?  then next time before you start spouting rubbish, stop and think about the brilliant job our police do.  Could you do it?  No!  you people cant even get a job!!!

Quite a convicted and emotionally charged response there Anonymous. Personally I respect the reasons why these students decided to block the road. Whilst it is a relatively small action, with relatively low impact, it is understandable that individuals may wish to do something, anything, just take action in the face of so much evident injustice.

Your response also makes several assumptions. The original poster suggests two seperate facts: 1 that protestors were videoed, and 2 that some people not directly involved in the obstruction (aka bystanders) were shoved. In your response you implie that he police were filming constantly, and used that groundless assumption as the core of your argument against the validity of the original poster's report of shoving.

Incidentally I was at Fairmont Hotel over the weekend and met many extremely pleasant police officers. They were polite and respectful human beings. However I cannot make the assumption that every individual in Fife police force expressed the same qualities during this protest.

I don't know either way, I am simply aware that I cannot make assumptions.
