Mainshill Wood Pre-Eviction Gathering

With eviction imminent the Mainshill Solidarity Camp in South Lanarkshire is holding another gathering to build on the already substantial defences on the site.

Sabotage both on the site [1,2] and at other coal sites in the area [1,2] has continued, and some have vowed it will continue after any eviction. Community support for the camp has solidified over the festive period, with local residents chipping in and delivering Christmas gifts to help the residents during some of the coldest weather in decades.

The Mainshill Solidarity Camp will be holding the Pre-Eviction Gathering between 23rd and 26th of January. Your support now could make all the difference!

How many jobs are the protestors threatening there?

In fact there will be no jobs created by the the opencast at mainshill, workers will just be moved from a different site. The Douglas and Rigside communities which are nearest the mainshill wont benefit at all from the opencast, and there is very high unemployment in the region.

Dont assume im "middle class left" and "against workers". Im with the workers too mate.

Im for green jobs, that will protect the working class's long term interests. If we burn coal, the co2 will heat the planet, causing water shortages, famines, floods, that will effect working class people the worst (and its effecting people like bangladeshi peasants badly already). Im sure the bosses and lairds will look after their own!

Instead of investing in coal and other dirty sources of power, we should be investing in training people up (where are the apprenticeships for young peope these days?), jobs in green technology, including insulation for working class houses and flats. Where i live we have high heating bills (and fuel poverty), because the council flats are badly insulated. We could be investing in green jobs.

And anyway, the majority of working class people in Douglas and Rigside dont want another coal mine, destroying their green spaces, ruining their health.

So, i think your argument that the mainshill protest is "against workers" doesnt have a leg to stand on, mate!
