The latest news on the Caltongate scheme throws up some serious questions for the future of the council owned East Market Street and the huge gap site in the Canongate in todays Scotsman.
SOOT have been questioning the council on the return of publicly owned buildings since Mountgrange went into adminnistration in 2009 and calling for the return to use of Canongate Venture (which had provided much needed affordable workshop space until the deal was struck to sell it to Mountgrange for demolition in 2005) and the council flats on the Canongate.
Perhaps now the Council will finally consider returning the common good land and other publicly owned buildings to productive use for the benefit of the community and look at opportunities for a more sustainable and responsive regeneration of this important area in the World Heritage Site?

So much ignorance of the facts in that it's difficult to know where to begin to refute it all. However, the scheme was not delayed in any way by objectors, although people have every right to object, and the council had a much greater hand in it than simply the issuing of building warrants.
Mountgrange went bust. The land is up for sale. Of course investors want a return, but that doesn't mean that anything goes.

'Scheme' which would probably be underway if it wasn't for all those people who opposed the plans in the first place regardless of their understanding and education on the subject, so it will just return to the down trodden lumpy mud area it is now, which is obviously great for the community! (not). Caltogate is a run down embarrassment to a city which promotes itself as being better!
What would you propose that they build there in a prime central city area?
A fucking bandstand for you to shout your nonsense from!?
and the site is owned by the banks not the council, so they'll be looking for a return on their investment now mountgrange have gone under, hence not charity shelters or soup kitchens. The council simply deal with the planning and building warrant issues.
As i've heard recently ' get real ' Lol...
