Gentle swoop as Climate Camp takes root

The to-be-dramatic "Swoop" to occupy the site of Climate Camp in Edinburgh wasn't so dramatic. As the site, in RBS's back garden, had been taken the night before, many people were already onsite and much (all?) risk taken out of the swoop process. So four separate meeting places to avoid containment were replaced with a single one, sunny St Andrews Square, where around 60 heavily-laden campers gathered, chatted and then left to go to the site. On the X48 bus, much to the relief of those with an Edinburgh A-Z.

As of 4pm, campers were busy setting up. Mains water is being arranged with the co-operation of the Council. Marquees are being erected and kitchens taking shape. The entrance to the Camp provides a view over the back windows and lawn of RBS's global HQ, carved out of the green belt scant months before its hubristic collapse. There wasn't too much activity visible there in the afternoon. Police and security guards are posted at each entrance but there's a marked lack of tension compared with previous years.

Those with time are encouraged to come along and help set-up for the Camp's official start on Saturday.

Am I right in thinking that the Glasgow to Edinburgh bus stops near Gogarburn on the Glasgow Road?

The 900 does, 55 minute journey from Buchanan Street bus station. Bus every 15 minutes during the day.

www.travelinescotland is your friend. The 900 is classed as a coach on that system, not a bus, for some reason. It has a map with stops, but there is a better map by going directly to http://maps.google.co.uk/

Yes, the 900 bus does stop outside RBS HQ on A8, access the climate camp site by going round back on Gogar Station Road.

You could also change trains from Glasgow and get off at Edinburgh Park and then half an hour walk.

The site is on outskirts of Edinburgh towards the Airport. http://osm.org/go/evfIUgDK-- Bus: No 48/X48 stops at RBS HQ then access Camp at back via Gogar Station Road. Near rail station: Edinburgh Park then half an hour walk through passageway under Ring Road along path.

RBS Porkies

It’s good to spot where RBS is choosing to lie. Their little web of deceit keeps turning, even while we set up camp opposite their shiny fortress.

The biggest whopper, is how great they are at funding renewable energy, and that this means we haven’t done our homework and should go camp in someone else’s back garden. But as the Rainforest Action Nework points out:

“According to financial market data compiled by Bloomberg, RBS ranked third as financier for alternative energy companies in 2006. In the period since the taxpayer bailout, RBS’ ranks a distant 19th!”

So once RBS may have been able to claim to be a leader in green energy (albeit continuing to invest in some of the most detructive fossil fuel projects on Earth). However their investment in renewables has got worse since they have been almost nationalised.

Of course, they just fed the little line to the press, and it got reprinted, even though there’s no truth in it. Another one like that was the great one that ‘RBS wanted to talk with the camp’s leaders, but we refused.’ Well, the first anyone heard about this offer was through the press.

In any case the time for talking is over. Activists from the First Nations in Canada, along with NGOs around the world, have spent years trying to convince RBS to stop investing in the Tar Sands, as well as all other fossil fuels, even by turning up at RBS shareholders’ meetings here in Edinburgh. The Chairman responded: “…our investments in the Tar Sands are so minimal that I don’t even know what they are.” Wow. If I were a shareholder, I’d be worried about his inability to keep track of $18 billion.

The next lie is them taking credit for the lovely camp site, claiming that they showed us where to camp after we naughtily found our way onto their property. My recollection is closer to them calling security and the police, who decided not to enter the site when they saw how many people had managed to take the space ....
