Say NO to bad landlords!
A demonstration against bad landlords will take place from noon onwards on Monday, 25 October 2010 in Edinburgh.
The gathering on Chambers Street, just in front of the Sheriff Court House, is aiming to give a voice to people who are affected by rogue landlords.
Unjustly withholding deposits, long delays in repairs, abusive and threatening behaviour, illegal evictions etc. - these are common practices among private landlords in Edinburgh.
The demonstration will start with a gathering on Chambers Street at 12 noon and at 1pm we will march down to the Scottish Parliament where at 1.30 we will put forward our proposals for changes in the Private Rented Housing Bill.
The demonstration coincides with the trial of landlord Mark Fortune in the Sheriff Court. Mark Fortune, who rents out a number of properties in the capital, is facing criminal charges arising from an illegal eviction which took place in April 2009.
Even if a tenant is determined to raise actions in the court and the landlord is found guilty, it is a miracle if the tenant receives compensation.
Changes in the rules and laws governing landlords are needed as soon as possible. The vast majority of private tenants are struggling with their landlord everyday.
Don't be a victim of bad landlords: Fight for your rights!
We need your support to force changes !

My own property and life has been severly affected by landlords and the flat companies they like to hide behind, tougher regulation of these landlords and the flat company fronts which they use to hide behind is definetely required.
Activities which I have noticed include, underinvestment in properties leading to common repairs and stat notices being issued, rent collected in person by the landlord then 'skimmed' to avoid tax, Landlords putting properties in other family members names including children as young as 9 to avoid tax.
Edinburgh landlords are a scourge to the City of Edinburgh and often lead to slum like living conditions ignoring problems associated with their flats, leading to the misery of others. The current landlord register was a very small token step and is basically unenforced. More power is required by Councils to deal with these landlord menaces.

All landlords are rouges. They purchase or gain leverage or commercial lean on a small part of gods earth, for the sole purpose of controlling the labour of other human beings. It is a form of slavery.
It's ok to charge people for you're labour or for something you have built, but not for something that you didn't create, like land.
