Glasgow demonstration for Lebanon Saturday July 22nd 2006
Saturday 22nd July 2006 saw worldwide demonstrations against the Israeli attack on Lebanon and one was held in Glasgow. It was called by Glasgow Stop the War Coalition and the Glasgow Lebanese community. It was supported by Glasgow Palestine Human Rights Campaign, Palestine Solidarity Campaign UK (Glasgow Group), and Glasgow University Stop the War.
The protest started to assemble in George Square and Hanover Street around 12.00 noon and moved off at 12.30 to noisy chants of “Mossad, CIA, How many kids have you killed today? and “Free, free Lebanon and “Justice for Lebanon, Justice for Palestine “George Bush, terrorist! Tony Blair, terrorist! Israel terrorist!
Many Lebanese and Palestinian flags were seen and placards and banners read `Hands off Lebanon`, `Don’t attack Iran` `Don’t attack Syria` and `Injustice = Hatred`.
The event attracted some 2,000 protesters – a lot considering the short planning time involved.
Rose Gentle, who has battled for her son Gordon with the Justice for Gordon Gentle campaign: (http://www.brocweb.com/justice4gordongentle/transcript.php) was among those marching as was human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar and Scottish National Party MSP for Glasgow Sandra White. Sandra is a regular anti-war protester and she commented: “I’m here today to support the Palestinian people and the Lebanon people and telling basically Israel to get out of Lebanon and get out of Palestine, talk about the axis of evil – unfortunately Israel is actually bankrolled by one of the biggest evil terrorist organisations in the world and that is Bush and Blair and American organisation. I’m here to say let’s have a ceasefire and stop the suffering throughout the World.
The march went past George Square and along St Vincent Place, St Vincent Street, Renfield Street, Union Street and Argyle Street to a rally at St Enoch Square. There was a five-minute sit down protest. The rally of around 2,000 was addressed by a number of speakers including Rose Gentle and Sandra White.
