Defend Sheridan, defend truth against power

The jury at the Tommy Sheridan case has duly delivered the expected verdict of guilty. Expected, that is to say, by those with some insight into British justice system and British society as a whole. However, this isn’t just another miscarriage of justice, as it clearly is on the basis of the case as reported through James Doleman’s blog, it is a show trial through which the British oligarchy has shown its power to put down whoever they wish regardless of the evidence or the facts of the case. In that sense its consequences are of the gravest possible nature for all of us who wish to free this country from the all enveloping tentacles of the financier/war interest.

It is strange to have to write an article on the basis of information provided by a blog: don’t we have a press, TV, media? Well, we may as well not, going by the coverage of this trial. It consisted of little more of soundbites, which certain witnesses seemed to be offering up in an obviously choreographed manner; there was no in depth coverage. The media offered impressions, mood music, suggestive little titbits, the kind of fare appropriate to a post-modern, dumbed-down, justice brought to your living room sort of show trial. Nothing to strain the critical faculties overmuch and certainly nothing to inform.

Still, the trial by media format seemed to have gone wrong,  the impressionism seemed to be going in  favour of Sheridan. This could only be explained by a continual series of reverses which was plaguing what was, on the evidence available to me, one of the most disastrous prosecution cases ever  launched.

The centrality of a dodgy looking bit of video with a voiceover destroyed any notion that the prosecution was coming with something new to the trial. If this is the best the intelligence services of the realm, now farmed out to News International apparently,  can muster then Sheridan is innocent of visiting a swingers club: in fact, he so innocent that he wouldn’t even know what a swingers club is. The rest of the trial was a disgraceful farrago of contradiction, lie and insinuation, an unstoppable fast-forward to fiasco. Against my better instincts, I even began to think Sheridan might win.

But it was too bad to be true. The trial raised a puzzling question which may in the end have clinched it in the jury room: why would so many people come forward to destroy themselves in the witness box? In other words, for Sheridan to be innocent there had to be, as he claimed, a conspiracy, but one which goes beyond even what he can imagine. For Sheridan to be innocent, this society has to be, not the cosy little island of democracy as we like to believe, not the fairy tale, but a benighted place controlled by dark hidden forces. The jury and most of the public prefer that not to be the reality and so can now sigh a collective sigh of relief safe in the knowledge that it is the evil one who has gone down. For me the evil is still very much at large and suddenly looms ever larger. Only truth can destroy it.

No solidarity with Tommy the grass

By Jay Knott

In 1990, there was a big riot in Central London against a new tax which the conservative government had tried to introduce, the Poll Tax. A left-wing group called Militant organized most of the protests against the tax, but it was horrified when things got out of their control. The group's leaders, including Tommy Sheridan, said that they would identify rioters to the police. Yet still there are idiots who support him.

Twenty years later, Sheridan's karma has caught up with him. He has been convictged of lying in court about going to orgies. He wasn't prosecuted for orgies. He wasn't prosecuted by the evil news barons for being a socialist. He was prosecuted for perjury, which is illegal.

In an amusing irony, Sheridan accused a friend of being a 'grass' for telling the truth about Sheridan's lies: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-11710677

I find this to have more truthiness to it:

No conspiracy needed.

I am so stunned to see this here that I am wasting my christmas to put it right.  Not that it actually says anything of note (or at all) apart from for some reason attaching the word 'innocent' to a man who wanted the entire left to unite to waste 6 years defending his false image as a bourgeouise heterosexual monogamous family man.  The guilty verdict was not expected even among those thousands of us who knew for a cold-hard fact he was guilty. We all know the truth. That includes all the other perjurers and the entire political leadership of the SWP/Solidarity/CWI etc etc.  Those who lied did so knowing they were lying having defended lying as a 'political' strategy openly.    Lying is a perfectly good political strategy in times of struggle - its just that there are no politics involved in having sex with loadsa folk (not that there's anything wrong with that but unless he 'struggled' to get it up there is no struggle involved here).

Obviously 'the state' has an interest in attacking prominent socialists like Sheridan but they needed no conspiracy....Tommy walked straight into their trap with his lies and abuse, split the left, launched into scathing attacks on women (specifically and generally) and destroyed the socialist movement.  Who needs a state conspiracy when you've got Tam?  Credit to all those who stood up for truth and  openess and against the slippery slope to Stalinism that being prepared to surrender their dignity for a pointless lie & do as their leader tells them leads us all. I could go on and on but there are 10,000 words over at the SSY blog that tell the whole story better than I could.

Thankfully Tommygeddon is over and those of us who have a genuine interest in uniting to get rid of capitalism can build new movements capable of doing so without heroes and great leaders.

F*cking hell - truth and Sheridan in the same sentance.  My a*se.

This is a coniving little shi* that broke up the entire left in Scotland because he didnt want his s*x life made public knowledge then questioned his former lovers about their s*x lives under oath in open court in person...and then called them liars.  Is it just me or does no-one else see the utter f*cking inappropriateness of this.

I used to admire Sheridan, I did.  I was taken in by him and to be honest I couldnt have given a sh*t about his s*x life - assuming it was consensual and non-exploitative (although it has to be said that I now have serious doubts about both of those now).  But Sheridan wanted to play the family man, devoted husband and father in nuclear middle class family bliss.  After the first libel case all that was missing was a "Hello" magazine photoshoot.

To protect this faux image of conservative family values, he broke up one of the most sucessful left wing parties in Europe; caused one of his closest comrades to spend 12 days in jail through trying to protect the party's internal documents, and pretended that he was a victim of some vast right wing conspiracy, comprising MI5, the SSP, News International and Lothian and Borders Police all working in collusion - yeah right.

Sheridan was warned and warned and WARNED that taking out a libel trial on the basis of true allegations was only going to end up in one place.  He was consistantly told that there was no way that socialists were going to lie so that he could play the family man and walk off into the sunset with £200K.

(bl**dy spam filter, wont let this through, maybe its the f*cking swearing)
