Glasgow's Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party (List) MSP Bill Aitken whose leaked comments on a local gang rape have caused outrage never showed up for work today.

The Justice of the Peace and former district court judge was due hold his surgery at 570 Mosspark Boulevard in South Glasgow's Cardonald. But, it seems that after a demo was hastily organised on Facebook last night, it was deemed wiser for him to stay away, rather than explain his disgusting victim-blaming comments to the fifteen protesters that picketed his office from 1pm till after 2pm today.

His comments during the course an interview with the Sunday Herald bertray sexist cliches that rape can be the victim's fault; that prostitutes have less to right to charge rape and that lone women are to blame for making themselves a target.

"Well, it is an area where quite a lot of the hookers take their clients."

"Well, you always know there's a lot more to these city-centre rapes than meet the eye, of course."

"it is absolutely essential that unaccompanied women take the greatest care when walking in these areas."

His comments also take on a dubious racial overtone. A transcription here:

It is chilling to think, though nothing new, to learn that Bill Aitken used to be a Judge and that he also currently 'Convenor of the Scottish Parliament's Justice Committee' and the Shadow Minister for Community Safety

Dunno about it being pathetic - if Bill Aitken was too feart to attend his surgery, this implies it had some sort of an impact. You seem to think that few people and hastily made placards equals an ineffectual protest, but the facts of this article (i.e. that Bill Aitken didn't turn up for his surgery) seem to suggest otherwise.

What a dick. This story needs circulated more.

Seems like more and more politicians - local as well as national - are getting away with bigotry against some section of the population.

Edinburgh Council's education chief is apparently an anti-Gaelic bigot and one of the Scotsman's anti-Gaelic correspondent on the letters page is an anti-Semite too. What a bunch...

Yeah, his comments were racist, but the main problem is his blaming of rape victims - and the implication that if someone is a prostitute, then they have it coming!! The only person EVER to blame for rape is the rapist!
He should be sacked immediately!!

Eh? 'Studious... should work' - is that not a contradiction? Well, I work 50+ hours a week and I still think that Aikten is a fkn tool. The guy is an out and out knobend. The main fact is, he was stupid enough to get caught out. What else are these bigots saying behind closed doors?

Who cares as long as they get nowhere near power.

what is this fascination that some how people who protest do not work. From what I know most there where working or are students, and before you start, students leave eductaion and get a job, that is the point.
