On the 11th of January around 40 people protested outside the US consulate in Edinburgh against the continued detention of Prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. The demostration was organised by Amnestry International, Scotland Against Criminalising Communities and the Stop the War coalition. A letter was handed into the consulate demandiong the immediate closure of the detention facility. There were around 15 people wearing orange boiler suits like those worn by prisoners in the internationally illegal facility.
Despite very poor weather there was a descent turn out and many people went and joined a vigil on prince's street before heading to the scottish parliament. The protest was surrounded by a quiet air of contemplation for those held in solitary confinement. Those organisations present are trying every means possible to lobby the scottish parliament but it is ultimately up to the foreign office to apply pressure on the Bush administration to close Guantanamo. The human rights abuses documented at the camp show the utter disregard, by the administration, for international human rights law and completely undermine the moral basis for Bushes war on terror.
