Tree Removal at Middle Meadow Walk

Tree removal will be undertaken on Middle Meadow Walk, week commencing January 15th 2007 This is the announcement from the startpage of the events website of Edinburgh University: "On behalf of the University of Edinburgh and in agreement with Edinburgh Council, tree removal will be undertaken in this area of Middle Meadow Walk, week commencing January 15th 2007. In the interests of public safety, please be aware that there may be disruption to the cycle path at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience whilst we undertake the necessary works." It would be nice to know the reason of such an action, having in mind that last time some trees were felled (I think it was in November - in order to aid the Quartermile construction), there was some sort of reaction by some residents.

The reason is supposedly that work on the foundations of the buildings could potentially damage the roots of the 3 40-year-old elms, starving them of water and increasing the likely hood of them falling down in high winds. Although the trees are not on the land being developed, their roots extend into it. Naughty trees. So, the work must continue and the trees must go.
