Leith Anti-Workfare Action

12 noon Saturday 23 March 2013
Kirkgate shopping centre, Foot of Leith Walk
(till around 1.30/2pm)                                                                 Taking action against companies and charities involved in the government’s exploitative workfare schemes.                        Organised by Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty as part of the Britain-wide week of action co-ordinated via Boycott Workfare.

The growing opposition to workfare has forced many companies and charities to pull out of the forced work-for-your-benefits schemes. Holland and Barrett, the Red Cross, Scope, PDSA and Cancer Research are among the many who have withdrawn recently. Our actions are working!

But some employers need an extra push. Following occupations and pickets in Edinburgh and elsewhere British Heart Foundation announced they were “moving away” from workfare. Recently they declared they had withdrawn from the Mandatory Work Activity scheme. But they are openly declaring on their website that they are still participating in the Work Programme – despite the fact that in December this scheme was extended to give providers the power to force many sick and disabled claimants on Employment and Support Allowance to work for nothing, or face sanctions.

And big companies like Poundland and Superdrug who claimed to be pulling out of workfare are still involved.

Come along on Saturday and let all employers using workfare know –

IF YOU EXPLOIT US, WE WILL SHUT YOU DOWN!
