F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

A group of local artists, calling themselves the Free and Reactive Edinburgh Arts Kollective, are planning to transform a derelict warehouse in Granton into an arts venue for a four day event from the 10th to the 14th of October. There will be art exhibitions, live music, performances, films and educational workshops.

The organisers say that the event will include art by local artists, a scrap fashion show, local bands and DJ's and will run workshops where visitors can learn amongst many other things circus tricks, clothes design and customisation, dance and drama. They hope to give something back to local communities and wish to provide a socially inclusive space that is interactive and can be contributed to by everyone, rather than something to be consumed. There will be a cafe in the venue, and organisers are investigating whether to have a bar. One of the artists said “We want to transform an unused building into something with life, that people of all ages can get involved in, to incite creativity and get peoples brains ticking.” F.R.E.A.K., otherwise known as, Edinburgh Temporary Autonomous Arts is not a formal organisation but a loose collective of individuals, and one artist said “it is not owned or run by a person or organisation, but is open for anyone to get involved”. They aim to be as inclusive as possible and would love artists to come forward to make contributions. The local artists putting the event together are inspired by similar Temporary Autonomous Arts projects that have taken place in London, Bristol, Manchester, and in other European countries such as Poland and Germany. Unlike the Edinburgh event they are usually housed in a squatted venue. The philosophy of TAA is similar to that of the Temporary Autonomous Zone of Hakim Bey, which is the socio-political tactic of creating a temporary space that for a time releases the participants from formal structures of domination. The warehouse is owned by Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd., a large development company involved in the gentrification of the Leith and Granton areas. Waterfront are allowing the use of the building, providing electricity, water and are even cleaning the inside, to help the artists begin work. Organisers say that the event will not be a protest against gentrification. The event and renovation of the building will be financed by club nights, donations and has received a Young Scots Art Action Grant of £750. There will be several club nights in the near future to help raise funds. Edinburgh Temporary Autonomous Arts needs as many volunteers as possible to make the event a great success. They need people to come forward right now with technical and practical skills as well as artistic contributions. For more information about how to get involved email edinburgh@taaexhibitions.org

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

Nice idea, hope it went well. Though like I said in a post that was for some reason deleted I do take issue with this. "The philosophy of TAA is similar to that of the Temporary Autonomous Zone of Hakim Bey, which is the socio-political tactic of creating a temporary space that for a time releases the participants from formal structures of domination." Hakim Bey aka Peter Lambourn Wilson is a Paedophile whose works have been published in the NAMBLA journal, the name of which escapes me at present. NAMBLA for those who don't know is the North American Man Boy Love Association, an American paedophile agitation group. It is shocking that well meaning radicals continue to give the guy the air of publicity and validity that he does not deserve. Taken from:http://languageisavirus.com/bios/Hakim_Bey.htm Peter Lamborn Wilson (b. New York, 1945) is an American political writer, essayist, and poet, perhaps best known for first proposing the concept of the Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ), based on a historical review of pirate utopias and for advocating pedophilia in the 'NAMBLA Bulletin'. He sometimes writes under the name Hakim Bey. Also a selection from a list of his writings. * "Japanese Scarf" (poem, reprinted from Seditious Delicious) NAMBLA Bulletin, Jul-Aug 1985 * "Poem" NAMBLA Bulletin, Jan-Feb 1986 * "Five Conceptual Art Projects" NAMBLA Bulletin, Apr. 1986 * "My Political Beliefs" NAMBLA Bulletin, June 1986. * "Association for Ontological Anarchism, Communique #2." NAMBLA Bulletin, Jul-Aug 1986 * "The Face of God" NAMBLA Bulletin, Dec. 1986 * "The Eroticism of Banal Architecture" NAMBLA Bulletin, Jan-Feb 1987 * "Chaos Theory and the Nuclear Family" NAMBLA Bulletin, Mar. 1987 * "China Sea Post-Card" NAMBLA Bulletin, Mar. 1987 * "Divine Folly Indulges Pagan Passion" NAMBLA Bulletin, Nov. 1987 * "Boy-Love Novel Still Relevant 100 Years On" [a review of Fenny Skaller and Other Poems from the Books of the Nameless Love by the German anarchist John Henry Mackay] NAMBLA Bulletin, Apr. 1989

Oooops I Did it Again

Making allegations of child abuse that you can't be backed up will result in deleted posts. If Anonymous would care to repost the parts of their message that don't contradict the Editorial Guidelines that's all good by me. Does no-one else think that there's a difference between "Tactical" Art and "Temporary" Art….?

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

"Any reports back on how the event went any way?" Yup, but they were posted on IM-UK to avoid the crap sniping here.

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

this isn't a suitable forum for airing this ridiculous argument. one of you has to drop this because you'rs making both of yourselves look like idiots.

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

I just can't help myself sometimes. Though I do think death threats are a wee bit off. No more posting on this thread for me. I'll go infiltrate 911nutcase.org next methinks.

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

Hello too all Have only just read all the posts on here. I am one of the organisers of F.R.E.A.K and feel its a real shame to slate this event. Lots of people spent a lot of time and effort in to making an event like this happen in Edinburgh and we did what we set out to achive. We opened our doors to the public giving them a space that was free to use and they were able to let their creative mind run wild and to do what they wished from the hours of 1 till 12 for 4 days. This event will be running again this year with us just having had our 3rd meeting. If anyone would like to come and get involved or even just state their real oppinons to the F.R.E.A.K crew we'd love to hear from you. You can contact us at www.myspace.com/freaktaaedinburgh or e-mail freak_taa_edinburgh@yahoo.com Our next meeting will be at Wash Bar on Tue 6th May from 7pm. Be really good to have even more new faces down! Peace, Love and all the art you can handle Natalie @ F.R.E.A.K x

Re: F.R.E.A.K. show for Granton

No one was slating the event, just pointing out that the article gives unnecessary publicity for the paedophile Hakim Bey. It's a crying shame that the phrase Temporary Autonomous Zone was coined by him and that his idea of a TAZ is somewhere where he is 'free from the constraints of the state' in order to abuse children.
