Cuts protestors gather in Edinburgh

People affected by the planned cuts in education and other services in Edinburgh are meeting this Sunday evening to discuss how to fight back. Along with speakers from one of the threatened nurseries in Edinburgh, Andrew from Glasgow will introduce his pamphlet "How to Save your School from Closure". The meeting will take place at the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Terrace at 7pm this Sunday 16th September, under the title RESISTING THE CUTS, CLOSURES AND REDUNDANCIES IN EDINBURGH : FOR PEOPLES NEEDS NOT PROFIT! Edinburgh City Council recently announced plans to close 22 nursery, primary and secondary schools, along with threats of redundancies. A wave of opposition engulfed the council with workers staging a one-day strike and parents, students, teachers and community members mobilising numerous protests, including students strikes at primaries such as Craigentinny. As a direct result the SNP section of the Council’s coalition administration took fright, and withdrew their support for the plans, which will now have to be withdrawn in their present form. However it has become clear that the Council will still try and push through significant cuts, but in a sneakier fashion. The Evening News has carried at least two recent articles highlighting plans for education cuts, including one focusing on planned cuts on nursery provision (11.9.07). Parents are holding a protest against the nursery and education cuts at the City Chambers at 11.30am this Saturday 15th. A council worker told Indymedia : “It is VITAL that this be discussed, as although schools huv been given stay ay execution, the savin ay £10.5M to £14M will have to be made- this means that Community Learning & Dev, Early Years, Working Together and various other 'non-statutory' services will be targeted, especially if it causes less public distress than school closures.” The Forum meetings have stalls from AK, ACE, Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group, Indymedia Scotland – the organisers invite people to bring info for distribution THE FORUM - a medium for the open discussion of subjects in the public interest – meets monthly, usually on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the Quaker meeting house, which can be accessed from the Lawnmarket, at the top of the Royal Mile, near the Castle. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible (ramp and lift)
