Council worker slams Council bosses over cuts

A council worker has condemned the City of Edinburgh Council for proposing cuts which will hit working class communities, while senior managers rake in huge salaries. Asking that their name be withheld in case they are victimised, the council worker told Indymedia : "The Labour council froze council tax as a sweetner for the electorate in May '07- unfortunately, they forgot that they don't have the power to freeze inflation. This was backed by the Lib Dems- no sure aboot SNP, but electioneering has played a large part in the current budgetary problems. The senior managers in the Children & Families Dept are taking no responsibility whatsoever for the shortfall, and instead frontline services will be cut to cover up their ineptitude. The director earns £120K, and below her there are 6 managers each on £87.5K (total £645K for 7 staff), who would no doubt claim they are paid for the responsibility they take- we are still waitin for them to take any responsibility for this, whilst we face up to redundancy. The council is still proposin (as far as ah'm aware) to spend up tae £10M on re-brandin the coocnil. There is also the idea ay the Lib Dems to bring back the official robes to set them apart frae the Hoi Polloi- yi couldnae write it. The cooncil has always hud issues wi bein top heavy wi management, but since the formation ay Children & Families this has gone intae overdrive- our motto should be so many managers so little management. The increase in managemnet tiers hus happened wi oot any apparent discussion as tae how this will be paid for. Wherever the cuts come, it is working class communities who rely on the council most for services, so will be the most affected by these cuts. Ah've no doubt that this budget 'crisis' will lead to the privatisation ay Health & Social Care services, like home-helps, and this will become the template for future council service provision, which will be disastrous for workin class communities. “ The controversy over the cuts in Edinburgh continues to rage, with protestors due to besiege the council chambers tomorrow Saturday 15th from 11.30am onwards, while the following day, on Sunday evening, anti cuts campaigners are gathering at the Quaker Meeting house on Victoria Terrace at 7pm in a public discussion on how to resist the cuts.
