EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

Amidst an apparent blackout of world corporate media, Indymedia Scotland has learned that the NATO meeting will take place on the 14th of December, at Craigiehall. The meeting will be attended by defence ministers from 8 NATO countries, and other senior political and military officials who will be discussing the current situation in Afghanistan.
Craigie Hall, where the NATO event will be hosted.
UK Defence Secretary Des Browne, and the new foreign office minister for Africa, Asia and the UN Lord Malloch-Brown, will be hosting the meeting of defence and foreign ministers from the eight countries involved in the American imperialism in Afghanistan. All the countries that have troops in southern Afghanistan. the Urzugan, Helmad and Kandahar provinces, will be represented at the NATO event. Countries likely to attend are UK, US, Germany, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia and Romania. Defence Secretary Gates will be attending, as will Joel Fitzgibbons the new Australian minister of defence (1). The date and time of the event was discovered after several days of investigation by Indymedia Scotland, after finding corporate media reports indicating that NATO will be meeting in Edinburgh some time this month, and in others that it will be next week (2). A press release with the embargo "not for publication or broadcast before 0001 hours Friday 14 Dec 2007" was discovered on the Google cache for an online newswire (3), containing all the details of the event at Craigiehall. This is a significant leak, since it is certain that many important political and military figures will be attending the event, and will represent a security issue for the NATO meeting: however Indymedia Scotland believe that we have a right to be aware of, and to protest at such events to make our voices and opinions heard. The NATO event will begins at 10am British Army Headquarters, 2nd Division, Craigiehall, Edinburgh(4), with press advised to arrive at 8.45am. This was still available at the time of publication, however it will be removed very quickly, but Indymedia Scotland has a PDF linked to at the end of the article. Re: EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

" and for making our home town a terrorist threat by nato coming here!" It's OK, as long as the terrorists don't know where or when it's happening they won't have a target....Oh....too late ^^

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7139736.stm Coincidence? Any possibility that he thinks he may have to justify Afghanistan later in the week?

Re: EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

Get the bastards!!see ya all 7am fri

Rice for president?

Peter Dow - I thought you were being ironic until i remembered who you are! you live in Aberdeen, or at least did a couple of years ago when i was there (For those who dont know him, he is indeed pro-war and is obsessed with condy rice. no joke.) Do not be mistaken as many people are, into thinking that this war in afghanistan is about opium, Al-Qaeda, or peace: it is about oil and gas pipelines and permanent American military bases, it is about anglo-saxon hegemony. As such it is an unjust war. Furthermore, I think it is possible to be against NATO /and/ the Taliban. I was working for an NGO in afghanistan a year ago, and indeed, many afghans i spoke to shared this view.

Peter Dow

Poor Peter.Infatuated by liars and a prisoner of his own ignorance. There were no Jihadis in Iraq to speak of until the war. The Iraq war (The Coalition) has killed more Iraqis than Saddam ever came close to. The country is now a lawless shithole with no hope in sight. Millions killed and millions more displaced. Displaced means they have no homes, their neighbourhoods aren't safe, and are in similar circumstances to the refugees in Darfur. If you really wanted to remove Jihad and Wahabbism from the Stans you need to go after Saudi and Pakistan as they are the root problem. It's not difficult to find a mountain of documentary evidence that shows how prominent Saudis have been exporting their totally fucked up take on Islam to Pakistan, Afghanistan and the former Soviet Central Asian Republics. And how Waziristan (in Pakistan)is a glasshouse for Saudi extremism. The fact that the 'Coalition' isn't taking any of the main players to task is an admission that their choice of targets are purely economic. Afghanistan in order to try complete the gas pipeline they negotiated with the Taliban and Iraq to gain control of a major Opec producer. The Central Asian Republics are a great problem and many of the Jihadis in Afghanistan are from the region. The combination of corrupt and repressive regimes failing the poor and banning all forms of Islam has become a recruiting sergeant for Jihad. The US and UK pump billions in aid into these regimes to secure energy resources, and make no effort to pull the tyrants into line. In fact, some of these countries are even regarding as "safe" by Home Office Immigration. And lest we forget, that Bin Laden is a Saudi as were most of the 9/11 hijackers. And more importantly, we shouldn't forget that the US were supporting Al Qaeda and the Taliban through Pakistan right up until 9/11. And what have the NATO countries done to remove the dictator Musharraf in Pakistan? Or Mubarak in Egypt? Nothing! How about Burma and Zimbabwe? Nothing! Darfur? Algeria? How oftenn do you hear US and UK ministers criticising Saudi, Pakistan and Egypt? They such great Peacemongers now Peter? Or are you just totally ignorant of the subject matter! And as for the US involvement in WW1 & 2. If you were being attacked and a "friend" made you take out a loan before they would help you, how much of a friend would that really be?

The police are holding up people coming from Edinburgh - if you are in a vehicle head from Kirkliston and park on the side of the road.

Re: EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

The link "Full NATO summit - Edinburgh 2009" links to the Scotsman - do we have a right wing hacker or is this the correct link?

Re: EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

The copper who detained me and took my details while I was attempting to leave this peaceful protest said; "You shouldn't think we're agents of the State or anything".

Full Nato Summit 2009

That's a story about a big Nato summit / jamboree / piss-up in 2009. Not directly related but perhaps of interest. They might have tried to keep this meeting secret, but they'll happily trumpet nonsense about economic benefits to the city as a result of having killers to visit. ("You'll have had your spree?") Maybe we should include a "Warning: Commercial News Source" icon for it...

Re: EXCLUSIVE: NATO meets in Edinburgh 14th December

I'm writing an essay about Indymedia and unfortunatly i have to provide a balanced opinion... So i'll be drawing on all the negative sides such as dumb idiots worrying about terrorism on comment boards and all the hippies... but there's the positive too, like the fact that you can switch off your computer whenever you want and do something important, like take a walk outside. Ha Ha
