Student Stop the War Day School
Five years on from the invasion of Iraq and the monster marches against the war, the anti-war movement has, tragically, been proven right on the consequences of the shock and awe bombardment and occupation of that country.
The invasion has led to the deaths of over one million Iraqi civilians and thousands of coalition troops. The situation in Iraq goes from bad to worse with intermittent electricity and water supplies, a devastated infrastructure and a continuing military occupation.
The ‘War on Terror’, now being coined as, ‘The Long War’ by many in the pro-war establishment doesn’t - despite it being central to their strategy - end in Iraq. In-fact it is being fought on many fronts.
In response to the continuing carnage being wrought in the name of freedom and democracy, and in a bid to cover what the mainstream media won’t, Strathclyde Stop the War Coalition will be hosting an All Scotland Student Day School under the title: The Long War and its Many Fronts.
Sessions will include:
Iraq Today, Iran Tomorrow?
The Home Front: Islamaphobia, the Terror Laws and the Media.
Afghanistan and Pakistan: From Occupation to Destabilisation.
Proxy Wars, the Middle East and Africa: What’s Bush got to do with it?
War is a Student Issue: The Road to March 15th.
Speakers from across Britain and beyond will take part, with experts speaking on key issues surrounding ‘The Long War’. This is an ideal opportunity to hear from specialists in their field as they expand on important topics in contemporary conflicts and social tensions which relate to the ‘War on Terror’. It is also a chance to hear student experiences in the anti-war movement from around Scotland, with delegations coming from Glasgow Uni, Edinburgh Uni, Dundee Uni and St Andrews. Of course, there will also be plenty of time for discussion.
The event starts at 11 am on Saturday 16th of February in the Students Union (John Street) and is backed by Strathclyde Amnesty International, Strathclyde People and Planet and Strathclyde University Muslim Students Association
