The Scottish independence Convention (SIC) have recently launched a petition to demand a referendum on Scottish Independence. The organisation had a Burns night party to promote the event which included songs from Scottish band Deacon Blue and from singer/songwriter Dougie MacLean. Actor Andy Gray, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, former trade unionist Jimmy Reid and many others supported the dinner. Shortly after this the petition was officially launched within the Scottish parliament. Numerous MSP's signed the petition and the leader of the Scottish Socialist Party, Colin Fox and Independent MSP Margo MacDonald were amongst the first to sign it. The Independence Convention is backed by the Scottish Green Party, SNP, Scottish Socialist Party, Free Scotland party and other political groupings and civic activists. It is hoped that there will be a massive public response to the petition and that it will encourage the traditionally unionist parties to consider the logic of giving the Scottish people a democratic vote on independence. The independence referendum group Independence First are backing the petition and are planning a working conference on 1st March 2008 to help work the petition on the ground. The working conference will be held in the STUC offices in Glasgow and will be addressed by Elaine C Smith convenor of the Independence Convention. "Independence First want this petition to be a success. We have worked together with SIC in the past and we hope we can help on the organisational side to maximise support." said Joe Middleton Press Officer of Independence First. "If the unionists believe their case is better and really think Scots support the union then they should have no problem giving us a vote on it" added Mr Middleton.
