Demolitions to go ahead: gentrification approved.

The hotly contested 'Caltongate' gentrification plan has been approved by city councillors on Wednesday, in meeting that lasted over 10 hours. The two listed buildings will be demolished. Save Our Old Town protesters were present inside the meeting, and there was a demonstration outside the City Chambers all day. Campaigners vow to continue the struggle against this development, and plan to provoke a public enquiry. The demolition of the two listed buildings has been voted through by councillors on Wednesday to make way for the developer Mountgranges' plans for a new five-star hotel, conference centre, luxury flats, swanky offices. The proposal to demolish all but the facade of the Canongate tenements has been put on hold, pending a request from councillors for more information. The developers have been told to look at ways of keeping the buildings for social housing. Due to the large numbers of objections, around 2000, the project will have to be considered by Scottish Ministers who will then make the final decision. A large number of protesters were present in the meeting and regularly heckled the proponents of the 'Caltongate' development. There was also a static demonstration with many banners and a sound system outside the city chambers all day, attended initially by large numbers of people in the morning, dwindling toward the end of the day. Catriona Grant, a spokesperson for SOOT said: "There is no question that there has to be a public inquiry. The council has ignored a huge number of objections in favour of the £300 million investment they have been promised, without any justification for the loss of these listed buildings. The developers own a huge gap site on New Street which could have easily accommodated a five star hotel and conference centre." Campaigners stated that the meeting was rushed, that there was not enough time for debate, and that it was fundamentally undemocratic: placing the interests of rich developers ahead of those of local communities. Campaigners also stated that the whole 'Caltongate' process breaches competition laws, due to the fact that no other developers or the Canongate community were allowed to bid for the development contract.

The process has been completed in an honest and democratic way, you should now accept the fact that after 10 hours of debate with views being given on all sides the final decision has been made. As a local resident I welcome the regeneration.

no demolitions

I personally think that the regeneration should not involve the demolition of listed buildings, and that the tenements should be left intact. furthermore, the regeneration should focus on building more and better social housing, public spaces, community centres. I particularly like the idea SOOT proposed in their alternative-regeneration proposal that was ignored by the council for an indoor market on that site.

would anyone like to see the copy of the plans?

Plans please

Yes, if you have them please do post the plans to the media gallery and link from this article. Far too many of these documents lurk in council cabinets or inaccessible parts of official websites. Sunlight is the best disinfectant and crazy "artists impressions" of their developments are usually good for a laugh at least.

Re: Demolitions to go ahead: gentrification approved.

REGENERATION???!!!Since when has knocking down great swathes of a city overnight been called regeneration?.Was the blitz regeneration? If I hire some Caterpillars and knock down my local church/neighbours house with a scale drawing of a Holiday Inn/leisure complex under my arm, am I regenerating my neighbourhood??? Where before in Europe we had war damage preceding building 'development' the majority of which was social housing, now we have 'peace' damage, where private contractors smash whole communities into rubble, change the name of these spaces(Rebranding?-What the **** is "CALTONGATE???)to build Architecturally and Socially Offensive McCommunities for profit with no regard for either the social or cultural patrimony of our FINE city!!! Its called INVASION.Thats when outside unsolicited forces knock down great swates of a city without invitation/permission and then rechristen said area according to there own requirements... to call it GENTRIFICATION!!!!!!!!That implies some grace and reference to a classical ideal on the aesthetic front...don't see that in the plans...MORE LIKE TKMAXX GOES TO B&Q WITH AN AMEX.... These developers also 'regenerate' in war zones for immense profit..THey are philistine SCUM. Edinburgh now has a great gaping HOLE where its pancreas used to be !!That in itself is a disgrace. How on earth were they allowed to knock down New Street, the homes of many on the High Street, and the atmospheric surrounding area down in the first place??? Edinburgh has a new Disgrace. What is the point in having a system of listed buildings if commercial influence can have them knocked down? It makes a mockery of Edinburgh and its citizens, past and present. If Robert Louis Stevenson,Walter Scott,Raeburn, Conan Doyle, Graham Bell, SimpsonMacdiarmuid,et al were bodily around right now, the would be at the barricades!!!!!!!REALLY..If we have any cojones we sould all go up to the site and stop it happening. It reallly is the only way.I promise you!Lets humiliate the ****ers!!Really.
