Glasgow City Councillors today voted to approve the application for a £25-a-throw theme park in Pollok Park. This doesn't yet mean that the building will go ahead, as the application has been "called in" by the Scots Government.
Despite 900 objections, a suspiciously discreet consultation process and protests attracting up to a thousand people, the council planning committee voted 14-6 in favour.
Local councillor Colin Deans (SNP) voted in favour and described the protests as "sound and fury"; apparently being of the view that his constituents "signify nothing". More than 880 formal objections to the plan were lodged and duly ignored.
In an attempt to salvage their reputation, GoApe are offering a tokenistic 450 free goes for kids in the face of criticism that £25 is a little steep for to climb trees. (It's not clear if the cost of such a move would be met from their promotional budget).
Pollok Park is Common Good land that was gifted by the Maxwell family for the free use of the people of Glasgow. The grandson of the donor has called out the plans, saying they will discourage future gifts.
