Kumi Naidoo, head of Civicus, gave a press conference yesterday at the SCVO. He talked about the attacks on civil liberties in Britain and the world, his fight to release the two Ethiopian human rights activists Daniel Bekele and Netsanet Demissie and promoted the 8th World Assembly in Glasgow in June.
The press conference was called to campaign against the "detention without trial" proposal, which was debated yesterday in the House of Commons. The proposal would extend the period of imprisonment without charge to 42 days of custody.
Kumi Naidoo is also head of GCAP, Global Call to Action against poverty, the lobby group which organised the "Make Poverty History" campaign during the G8 2005. Kumi Naidoo conceeded that it was a mistake to align the MPH campaign so closely to the Blair and Brown government and that there were a lot of tactical and strategic weaknesses present in the campaign.
