Photos from anti-war march and rally in Glasgow Saturday 19th March 2005.

Here are 8 photos from the anti-war march and rally in Glasgow on Saturday 19th March 2005. Photos taken by Lesley Rodgers. Here are some photos taken by Lesley. The anti-war demo in Glasgow drew about 2,000 people for a march and rally on Saturday 19th March 2005. You'll see where we went after MOD, next stop was Lab Party HQ which was locked up, onto Sauchiehall St, into Mad Donald’s (where the polis "chucked" it, obviously realising we hadn't a clue what we were doin), so we promptly moved up to SMG where a few of us were threatened with bein locked inside, oh now wasn't that just what we wanted! However there really weren't enough of us to make an impact so after some discussion we headed to Mono for a pint to finish off the day with plans for our next action. A great day was had by all. Hope your jacket turns up (referring to Paul’s anorak and gloves in a Sainsbury’s carrier bag which disappeared from St Enoch Square), talk again soon, Lx

Thanks for the belly laugh Hassan! Got pulled today too, are they out to get me or am I paranoid? Traffic cops in Barrhead followed me for a mile and flashed me down bang smack in front of a large club window, behind which a bunch of my old mates were making gestures that I might get some sort of book thrown at me! As I emerged from my car I was asked where my tax disc is displayed, I explained, being a non conformist, that it's on the right hand side of the windscreen but the officer still wanted me to get in the back of his plush car. I complied and proceeded to ask if my Anti G8 t- shirt was what got me "pulled", the coppers conceded that their eyesight isn't that good! However, that opened up a conversation in itself, both cops admitting to not understanding why there's so much opposition, and that they'd been given information relating to previous opposition to the summits and that they should be prepared for any eventuality. We discussed the use of weapons on protestors, the cost of rooms in Gleneagles, the profits the local businesses will make due to a huge tourist increase and the poverty in housing schemes around the country. I was hoping that we could achieve some level of understanding of each others agenda, so pursued the matter further and asked him how he would hit a terrorist with a nuclear submarine, and where did he access his "news" stories?? I'm pretty sure the young copper said that I should be glad we have a protective police force, I'm certain that I said he should be grateful he has a protecting public, and not to believe all he reads in the "press"!

Good photos. But one question where have all those people been for the past three years? It is all very well showing up at one demo, but if that is all a individual is prepared to do to protest illegal wars, what is the point? I hope people don't think up at one demo is something to be overly pleased about. I think the whole anti-war movement in Scotland, if there is such a thing should carry it's head in shame, since the challenge it has raised against the British warmongering establishment has been abysmal. I include the SSP, the Greens, and all those other sections of the 'left' who have done next to nothing to translate genuine anti-war feeling into genuine political action. So don't be so pleased with yourself. Don't celebrate failure.

Glad you had the talk with the police Lesley, might have have dispelled some of the ideas that they had of us as idiots who are just out to cause carnage etc. You've got me wanting to move my tax disc to the other side too now haha. James I don't think many of us are pleased with ourselves, in fact I personally didn't think saturday was very productive but I dont blame anyone for trying. i posted video since thats what the site is for, reporting what happened. I think we have failed miserably to awaken the conscience of the country. I'm studying in university now and pretty much my entire working life will be spent protesting injustice in my profession in the most effective way i know (rather not go into it). Anyway I think you're right - many people go to a protest and think they've done their bit and go home with a cleared conscience. Sometimes I wonder if some of our actions are just preaching to the converted. I don't think we should lose our enthusiasm or hope though, we just need to channel it more productively.

Aye, demos are good but small group actions are important too. Does everyone know about the April Fool's laugh in against the military? Meet 12noon on Friday 1st April at the Cenotaph next to George Square. Bring clown costumes, custard pies, etc. We'll then be heading off to take the piss out of the armny at a number of locations. If you want to get involved in other actions like yesterday's BAE blockade, email Glasgow Anti War Action at faslanepeacecamp@hotmail.com, or come along to the laugh in. There's also a Troops Out update list, not sure of the email. Glasgow Autonomy Updates (glasgowautonomyupdates-subscribe@lists.riseup.net) also sends out information on a wide range of political stuff going on in Glasgow every week.
