Enough is Enough - Turn The Tide Against Racism - Refugees are Welcome Here demo

13/03/2010 11:00

The suicide of three refugees has shocked Glasgow and the rest of the country. This is where all the racist scapegoating and tough posturing on immigration and asylum leads. It is time to stop the state of poverty, enforced idleness and permanent fear of the knock on the door in which our asylum seeker neighbours live. Let them work, contribute, find their own homes, and get on with their lives. Join the Red Road march and rally to show your revulsion at the dreadful consequences of our immigration and asylum laws and demonstrate the real welcoming spirit of Glasgow and the wider community.

MARCH FROM 63 PETERSHILL DRIVE - SATURDAY 13 MARCH 11pm (ten minutes from Barnhill train station or take the number 12 or 56 bus to Red Road)
RALLY AT CITY CHAMBERS GEORGE SQ @ 12pm

Supported by Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees, Positive Action in Housing, and the Unity Asylum Rights Centre.

On sunday monring three people decided to jump out of their 15 story flat. They had recently been told they would not be able to stay in Scotland following the failure of their asylam case.
Reports from other asylam seekrs living in the same flat block have stated:

1. That the home office were knocking on the door of the flat when the people decided to end their lives.
2. That the firday before the incident the police had told them to leave their house making them homless
3. That the idea of returning to thier home counry terrorfied them.
4.That around their bodies where printed letters stating
WE WANT OUR FREEDOM
BELEIVE US
WE HAVE DIED FOR OUR FREEDOM

the home office deny any involvement and deny they were there
the YMCA will not give their names or nationality
the staff at Peterhill drive Red Road have told asylam seekers if they talk to the press they will be kicked out.

Everyday the home office makes many people's lives hell. It puts already vunurable people in horric conditions of stress paranoia and depression. It tears apart families and destroys lives.

Without fear or favour: a voice for rape survivors in the criminal justice system?

26/03/2010 09:30
26/03/2010 16:30

9.30am - 4.30pm 26th March 2010
Radisson Hotel, 301 Argyle Street, Glasgow G2 8DL

The past decade has seen significant concern about the ability of the Scottish criminal justice system to provide justice to rape survivors. The conviction rate for rape continues to be particularly low in Scotland, with the most recent figures suggesting only 3.7% of rapes reported to the police result in a conviction. Rape survivors continue to speak of harrowing ordeals when giving evidence in court.

This FREE conference – organised by Rape Crisis Scotland & the Equality & Human Rights Commission Scotland - provides a timely opportunity to consider whether a new and radical approach is required to improve access to justice following rape.

A full conference programme and booking form will be circulated but if you would like to register your interest just now please email julie.scobbie@rapecrisisscotland.org.uk
