In Z (1969), an investigating judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, tries to uncover the truth about the murder of a prominent leftist politician, played by Yves Montand, while government officials and the military attempt to cover up their roles. The film is a fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. It had additional resonance because, at the time of its release, Greece had been ruled for two years by the "Regime of the Colonels". Z won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Costa Gavras and co-writer Jorge Semprún won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Foreign Film Screenplay.

One year on since Israel's war crimes + Genocide on Gaza

While we enjoy the festive break with friends and family Gazans feel no relief from Israel's ongoing siege and blockade. Meanwhile Israel is lashing out against increasing international pressure through the campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) and is stepping up their repression of Palestinian activists involved in the resistance against colonisation, occupation and apartheid - Jamal Juma' is one of many thousands of imprisoned Palestinians.

Israel has NOT been successful in silencing the Palestinian civil society call for BDS!

It is important we respond by intensifying the BDS campaign against Israel.

Invitation to Scottish Refugee Council meeting to discuss UK Border Agency proposals to reform asylum support

The UK Border Agency published proposals on 12 November 2009 to make major reforms to how it provides financial support to people seeking asylum in the UK. UKBA is seeking views on their proposals up to 4 February 2010.

Scottish Refugee Council is deeply concerned about the impact that these proposed changes will have on individuals and families seeking asylum in Scotland and the potential increase in destitution. We are holding a meeting on Thursday 14 January 2010 to bring together community organisations, churches, charities, refugee community organisations, individuals and campaigners concerned about asylum support.

The aims of the meeting will be to:

• Share information on the current UKBA proposals and discuss recent changes such as the new rules on submitting further representations and the introduction of the Azure payment card; and
• Share concerns and suggestions to improve asylum support and promote responses to the UKBA consultation.

Presentations will be short with plenty of opportunity for discussion.

The Jewish Fast for Gaza is an ad hoc group of rabbis, Jews, and people of conscience who have committed to undertake a monthly daytime fast in support of the following goals:

1. To call for a lifting of the blockade that prevents the entry of civilian goods and services into Gaza;
2. To provide humanitarian and developmental aid to the people of Gaza;
3. To call upon Israel, the US, and the international community to engage in negotiations without pre-conditions with all relevant Palestinian parties - including Hamas - in order to end the blockade;
4. To encourage the American government to vigorously engage both Israelis and Palestinians toward a just and peaceful settlement of the conflict.

The next monthly fast day of Ta’anit Tzedek - Jewish Fast for Gaza falls on December 17, the sixth day of Hanukkah. On Hanukkah last year, Israel launched “Operation Cast Lead” - a military assault that eventually killed over 1300 people,destroyed thousands of homes and devastated much of the infrastructure of Gaza. Since this attack, Gazans have been unable to rebuild as the continuing Israeli blockade prevents the import of building and other essential materials.

As Jewish tradition prohibits fasting during the festival of Hanukkah,* *supporters of Ta’anit Tzedek and all people of faith and conscience are invited devote December 17 to “Operation Not by Might and Not by Power,” a day of study, reflection and action.

 

Tomorrow is the 6th of December, the first aniversary of the fatal shooting of Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15-year old boy, by a Greek policeman.

We, Greek students in Glasgow and some international folks, are going to the Greek Consulate, in order to send a solidarity message to students in Greece that demonstrate against... the police violence.

Whoever is interested in joing us, we will meet at Hillhead Station at 1:00 pm to go to the Consulate ( 1 Kirklee Quadrant) at 2:00 pm.

Unity in the Community in association with the Centre for Contemporary Arts are very pleased to announce that on Saturday 19th December we will be showing the wonderful fantasy cartoon film 'Kirikou and the Sorceress' as a holiday treat for all the family.

Kirikou and the Sorceress is folk tale set in a rural West Africa, full of stories and folktales, where monsters, sorceresses and magic live side by side with villagers in their huts.

Tiny Kirikou is born into an African village upon which a sorceress called Karaba has cast a terrible spell: the spring has dried up, the villagers are being blackmailed, the men of the village have either been kidnapped or have mysteriously disappeared. 'She eats them!' the superstitious villagers declare.

Karaba is a cruel woman, surrounded by her fearless servants her 'fetishes'. But, as soon as he is born, Kirikou wants to rid the village of Karaba's curse and understand the cause of her wickedness. His adventure-filled voyage leads Kirikou to the only person who knows the truth behind Karaba's wickedness, the Wise Man of the Mountain.

This is a lovely film that children of all ages will enjoy!
