Edinburgh Council hypocrisy – vote against privatisation being ignored

Edinburgh Council refuse workers are angry that Blue Arrow private contractors have been brought in to do their work.  Only months ago the full Council voted against the privatisation of refuse collection, street cleaning and related services.  But now Director of Services for Communities Mark Turley is disregarding the Council vote and bringing in private firms.

Edinburgh Tescos invaded by anti workfare protestors

Demonstrators opposing compulsory work for benefits invaded two branches of Tescos and picketed Poundstretcher and British Heart Foundation in Edinburgh on Saturday 3rd March.  Police dragged protestors out of Tescos, provoking protests and a virtual blockade of the store entrance by the police themselves.  Protests continued along the Bridges area of the city centre for almost 3 hours. 

Victory for Edinburgh unemployed over A4e

Tribunal overturns sanction and upholds right to representation

Claimants in Edinburgh have won a potentially crucial victory in the battle for the right of unemployed people to be represented at DWP provider A4e – thanks to the courageous stand taken by brave ex-miner Peter. An independent Tribunal has ruled that a claimant cannot have his benefits stopped because he “felt the need to have the representative of his choice.”

Occupy Edinburgh to march on Saturday

The Occupy Edinburgh movement continues to camp in St Andrews Square, and on Saturday 29 October is due to hold a march at 12 noon, one of many simultaneous demos globally in support of the Robin Hood tax. This will be followed by a festival in the square.

Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty (ECAP) have won a significant victory for the unemployed in the war against New Deal provider A4e, thanks to the courageous stand taken by one brave unemployed ex-miner, who despite threats and benefit suspension stood up to A4e for over a year!   

Protests at ATOS Centres for Disability Benefits Tests

Protesters are due to descend on ATOS “asssement centres” where people on disability benefits are tested to decide if their benefits are to be cut off. The UK-wide day of action against benefits cuts on 14th April will see protests in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and at several locations in England.

ATOS are a profit-motivated company and they are being paid half a billion pounds by the government to victimise sick and disabled people,” say Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty, who are organising the protest at ATOS's Edinburgh base at York Place.

Huge demo in London against Cut-backs

Around half a million people demonstrated in central London on 26th March against the ConDem government’s cut-backs.  Thousands took direct action against corporate targets. A demonstrator told Indymedia Scotland:  “We succeeded in our aim of taking over significant areas of central London. Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square were all controlled by demonstrators for a good part of the day.”
