Obama Oks More Kidnappings

Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Times reported that executive orders signed by Obama approve the continued use of "extraordinary renditions" as a tool in the so-called "war on terror."

The California Intelligence Agency

It wasn't Goldman Sachs or Microsoft that topped the Obama campaign contribution list. They were numbers two and three, respectively. It was higher education, specifically the University of California system that ranked numero uno. The sprawling UC network contributed more than $1.3 million to Obama's successful presidential bid, according to OpenSecrets.org.

C.D. Stelzer peeks at the close-knit relationships among those who pull the strings in international politics, worldwide philanthropy and the global energy grab.

A Tale of Two Irishmen

... Another Irishman, Ed Horgan, didn't get quite the same red-carpet treatment as Bono and his mates. In fact, he had a difficult time just gaining entry into the United States to attend the festivities.

Survive the Jive Alive: See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Both before assuming the presidency and since taking office, President Barack Obama has expressed clearly that he does not intend to call for an investigation or prosecution of alleged illegal actions taken by President George W. Bush or any officials of his administration.

War Is Peace: Obama's National Security Adviser Backs Expanding War in Afghanistan

Last year, Marine Gen. James Jones, now the national security adviser to President Barack Obama, contributed to a think-tank analysis on how to shore up the rapidly deteriorating military situation in Afghanistan. Jones provided his expertise as a member of the Afghanistan Study Group, an offshoot of the U.S. Institute for Peace. USIP is the same quasi-governmental agency that spawned the Iraq Study Group, which set the present course in Iraq. Two members of the Iraq Study Group are top-ranking officials in the new Obama administration: Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a holdover from the Bush administration; and Leon Panetta, Obama's designated CIA director. So Obama's national security adviser, designated CIA director and Defense Secretary all have past ties to the USIP, which would be heartening if the agency lived up to its name. The question is whether the Institute for Peace is really seeking peace. In reality, the plan put forward by the Afghanistan Study Group, which the Obama administration has embraced, calls for doubling U.S. military operations on the ground in Afghanistan. At the same time, the military escalation will be tempered with an increased propaganda campaign that will focus on a more diplomatic approach to resolving the conflict. The two-pronged approach of waging war while advocating diplomacy is not without victims -- Afghan civilians. [read more at http://survivethejivealive.blogspot.com]

Study War No More: Is The U.S. Institute for Peace Waging War?

In an Orwellian move, the business of war was put in the hands of the United States Institute for Peace (ISIP). The presidential advisory group includes twelve members from outside the federal government, usually former high-level officials. Ex-officio members are drawn from the Defense Department, State Department and National Defense University. ISIP established the Iraq Study Group to come up with recommendations for changing the course of the war in Iraq. The group was headed by James Baker, a former chief of staff and cabinet member in the administration of George H.W. Bush, the president's father. It was not the first time that Baker had been called upon to handle a sensitive assignment. The confidante of the Bush family also oversaw the Florida presidential "recount" in 2000, which ultimately resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court appointing George W. Bush president. read more at http://survivethejivealive.blogspot.com

Blown Away: Israel Dropped US-Made Bombs on Gaza

President Barack Obama made clear yesterday that the U.S. will continue to support Israel. At the same time, the president said his "heart goes out" to the the families of the more than one thousand Palestinians killed during Israeli's recent bombardment of Gaza. Obama said that for the fragile cease fire to continue it would be necessary for the ruling Hamas Party to immediately halt any further smuggling of arms into Gaza via Egypt. Obama stressed that humanitarian aid to the Palestinians would be contingent on Hamas meeting U.S. demands. What the president failed to acknowledge is that the bombs dropped by Israel on the Palestinians were very likely supplied by the U.S. In September, the U.S. Defense Security Coordinating Agency announced the proposed sale to Israel of 1,000 GBU-39 small-diameter bombs at a cost of $77 million. The armaments are manufactured under government contract in St. Louis, Missouri by Boeing Corp. read more at http://survivethejivealive.blogspot.com
